About Robert Biale Vineyards

Robert Biale Vineyards is Napa Valley's premier old-vine Zinfandel specialist, a producer whose devotion to heritage vineyards and whose signature "Black Chicken" bottling have earned it a following among Zinfandel lovers that borders on the fanatical. Founded in 1991 by Robert Biale, whose Italian immigrant grandfather planted the estate vineyard in 1937, the winery takes its most famous wine's name from a Prohibition-era code word: the Biale family sold wine illegally during the dry years, and when customers called to place orders, they asked for "black chickens" in case the phone line was tapped.

The estate vineyard covers 25 acres in the Oak Knoll District, with the original 1937 plantings of Zinfandel still producing fruit nearly 90 years later. These ancient, gnarled vines yield tiny quantities of intensely flavored grapes that make the Black Chicken one of the most sought-after Zinfandels in California. The estate also sources old-vine Zinfandel from heritage vineyards across Napa and Sonoma, including sites that date to the late 19th century. The commitment to preserving these heritage plantings gives Biale a conservationist role similar to Turley Wine Cellars.

Winemaker Tres Goetting produces a range of vineyard-designate Zinfandels alongside the flagship Black Chicken, each showing the distinct character of its source vineyard. The Black Chicken is rich and spicy, with the concentration that only 80+ year old vines can deliver. The Aldo's Vineyard bottling, from another historic Napa planting, offers a more elegant expression. The Petite Sirah, from old vines, is dark and powerful. The entire portfolio celebrates the depth and complexity that old vines produce, challenging the perception of Zinfandel as a simple, fruity variety.

The tasting room in Napa offers a relaxed, friendly experience focused on the stories behind each vineyard. The Prohibition-era Black Chicken tale is a favorite conversation starter, and the staff are passionate about the heritage vineyards that supply the fruit. Tastings include the full range of vineyard-designate wines, providing a comparative tour of old-vine Zinfandel terroir. At $45, the fee is fair for wines of this quality and history.

Biale matters because it preserves Napa Valley's viticultural heritage, one old vine at a time. The 1937 estate plantings are living history, producing wine from grapevines that were alive during the Great Depression, World War II, and every subsequent chapter of American history. The Black Chicken story adds a layer of cultural charm, but it is the quality of the wine from ancient vines that makes Biale essential for anyone who cares about the variety's potential.
