About Hagafen Cellars

Hagafen Cellars holds a unique position in Napa Valley as the only producer of kosher wines in the appellation, a distinction that has earned the winery a place at five presidential inaugurations and three White House state dinners. Founded in 1979 by Ernie Weir, who saw an opportunity to produce kosher wines of genuine quality from Napa Valley fruit at a time when most kosher wines were sweet, mass-produced, and indistinguishable from grape juice, Hagafen (Hebrew for "the vine") has spent over four decades proving that kosher winemaking and world-class quality are not mutually exclusive.

The estate includes 6 acres of vineyard in the Oak Knoll District, supplemented by fruit from contracted growers across Napa Valley. The kosher winemaking process, which requires Sabbath-observant supervision of every stage from crushing through bottling, adds complexity and cost to the production but does not inherently affect the quality of the wine. The same grapes, the same terroir, and the same winemaking techniques produce kosher wine that tastes identical to non-kosher wine from the same vineyard, a point that Hagafen has demonstrated consistently for decades.

Ernie Weir produces a diverse portfolio that includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc, all certified kosher by the Orthodox Union. The Cabernet shows genuine Oak Knoll District character, with the moderate tannins and balanced acidity that the cooler appellation naturally provides. The Riesling is one of the few produced in Napa Valley and benefits from the Oak Knoll District's cool conditions. The wines have been poured at the White House under multiple administrations, a distinction that speaks to their quality regardless of dietary certification.

The tasting room in the Oak Knoll District is warm and welcoming, with the staff happy to explain the kosher winemaking process for visitors who are curious. The experience is educational and inclusive, designed to appeal to both kosher wine drinkers and general visitors who want to taste well-made Napa Valley wine. The $35 tasting fee is among the most affordable in the valley, and the diverse portfolio ensures that every visitor finds something to enjoy.

Hagafen matters because it demolished the assumption that kosher wine must sacrifice quality for religious compliance. Ernie Weir's four decades of producing presidential-caliber wine from Napa Valley fruit have established Hagafen as the benchmark for kosher winemaking in America. The wines serve as proof that the constraints of kosher production, like the constraints of organic farming or biodynamic practice, can coexist with, and even enhance, the pursuit of excellence.
