About Laird Family Estate

Laird Family Estate is one of Napa Valley's most influential yet least recognized operations, a family that farms over 2,000 acres of vineyard and supplies fruit to more than 50 premium wineries but maintains a relatively low profile under its own label. Founded in 1970 by Ken Laird, a retired naval officer who recognized the value of Napa Valley agricultural land, the estate has grown into one of the largest privately held vineyard operations in the valley. The Laird family's grapes end up in bottles that bear some of the most prestigious names in California wine, though few consumers realize the connection.

The 2,000-plus acres span multiple Napa Valley appellations, from the cool southern reaches of Oak Knoll and Carneros to the warm benchlands of Rutherford and St. Helena. This geographic breadth makes Laird one of the most diversified vineyard operations in the valley, with fruit from dramatically different terroirs available for both their own wines and their grower clients. The scale of the operation is unusual in a valley where most famous estates farm fewer than 100 acres, but the Laird family manages their vast holdings with the same attention to detail that characterizes the valley's smallest boutique producers.

Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus, who also makes his own wines under the Aonair label and serves as winemaker at Chappellet, selects the finest lots from the Laird vineyards for the estate label. The portfolio includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot, each sourced from the appellation best suited to the variety. The wines are well-crafted and fairly priced, reflecting the family's deep knowledge of which vineyard blocks produce the most exceptional fruit. A downtown Napa tasting room on Main Street makes the wines accessible to visitors.

The downtown Napa tasting room offers an approachable introduction to the Laird portfolio. The staff are knowledgeable about the family's extensive vineyard holdings and can explain how different Napa appellations influence the character of each wine. The tasting fee of $40 is reasonable, and the wines frequently overdeliver for their price. For visitors interested in the business of grape growing, Laird provides a fascinating window into the supplier relationships that underpin much of Napa Valley's wine production.

Laird's importance to Napa Valley extends far beyond its own label. The family's vineyards are the hidden foundation of dozens of acclaimed wine brands, providing the raw material that other producers transform into some of the valley's most celebrated bottlings. Understanding Laird is understanding the infrastructure of Napa Valley winemaking, and tasting the estate wines is tasting the fruit that many famous neighbors wish they could secure for themselves.
