About Pine Ridge Vineyards

Pine Ridge Vineyards occupies a prime position on the Silverado Trail in the Stags Leap District, one of Napa Valley's most acclaimed appellations for Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 1978 by Gary Andrus, a former Olympic ski team member turned winemaker, Pine Ridge was among the early wave of Stags Leap estates that recognized the district's unique potential for producing Cabernets of elegance and power. Andrus was drawn to the site by its well-drained volcanic soils and the distinctive palisades that rise dramatically behind the vineyards, trapping heat and creating the warm microclimate that defines the district's character.

The estate encompasses 200 acres of vineyards spanning five Napa Valley appellations: Stags Leap District, Oakville, Rutherford, Carneros, and Howell Mountain. This multi-appellation approach gives the winemaking team access to a remarkable range of growing conditions, from the cool Carneros breezes to the intense heat of Howell Mountain. The core of the production remains the Stags Leap District estate, where the volcanic soils produce Cabernet of signature texture and aromatic complexity.

Winemaker Michael Beaulac crafts a portfolio that includes one of Napa's most underrated values: the Chenin Blanc-Viognier blend, a refreshing white wine that stands apart from the sea of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship, showing the district's characteristic combination of firm tannins and silky texture. The Fortis Cabernet, sourced from the estate's highest-elevation blocks, offers a more intense, mountain-influenced expression of the terroir.

The tasting room on the Silverado Trail offers one of the most popular cave experiences in the valley. Visitors can walk through wine caves that extend over 15,000 square feet into the hillside, tasting wines at stations set up among the barrels. The cave temperature holds at a constant 60 degrees, providing welcome relief on hot summer days. The outdoor terrace overlooks the estate vineyard and the Stags Leap palisades, creating a setting that captures the essence of the district.

Pine Ridge holds an important place in Napa Valley's evolution as one of the estates that helped define the Stags Leap District's identity in the late 1970s and 1980s. The winery's combination of prime terroir, experienced winemaking, and a commitment to value (the Chenin Blanc-Viognier retails for under $20) makes it one of the most accessible and rewarding stops on the Silverado Trail. Visitors who arrive expecting another Cabernet factory leave surprised by the diversity and personality of the portfolio.
