About Cliff Lede Vineyards

Cliff Lede Vineyards is the most rock-and-roll winery in the Stags Leap District, an estate where vineyard blocks are named after classic rock albums and the tasting experience pulses with the energy of a backstage pass. Founded in 2002 by Canadian-born Bordeaux enthusiast Cliff Lede, the estate occupies 60 acres in the heart of the Stags Leap District, surrounded by some of the most famous vineyard land in North America. Lede's passion for music is woven into every aspect of the property, from the block names (Twin Peaks, Songbook, High Fidelity) to the Poetry Inn, a luxury boutique hotel perched above the vineyard.

The estate vineyards sit on the volcanic, well-drained soils that define the Stags Leap District, with the dramatic palisades rising behind the property. The site benefits from the district's unique microclimate: warm afternoons cooled by evening breezes that sweep through the gap between the palisades, allowing grapes to ripen fully while retaining the acidity that gives Stags Leap wines their signature elegance. Each vineyard block is farmed individually, with the rock album naming convention serving as more than a gimmick; it creates a shorthand for discussing specific terroir characteristics.

Winemaker Christopher Tynan produces a focused portfolio of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and the Claret red blend. The estate Cabernet is classic Stags Leap District, combining power with the silky texture that distinguishes the appellation from its more tannic neighbors. The Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet, sourced from the legendary Oakville vineyard, is the crown jewel, regularly earning scores above 97 points. The Sauvignon Blanc, crisp and aromatic, provides a refreshing counterpoint to the reds and is one of the best white wines made in the district.

The tasting experience at Cliff Lede matches the rock-and-roll aesthetic. The FEL tasting room (named after Cliff's daughter Felicia) focuses on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Anderson Valley and Sonoma Coast. The main estate offers gallery-like spaces with contemporary art installations, curated music playlists, and tasting flights designed to showcase the relationship between music and wine. For the full experience, a stay at the Poetry Inn, with its panoramic valley views and private tasting, is one of the most luxurious overnight experiences in wine country.

Cliff Lede demonstrates that a serious winery can also be a joyful one. The rock-and-roll theme could easily feel forced, but Lede's genuine passion for music makes it authentic rather than contrived. The wines are crafted with the same intensity and attention to detail as the cultural programming, and the combination creates an experience that appeals to visitors who want their Napa tasting to be memorable for more than just the wine in the glass.
