About Groth Vineyards & Winery

Groth Vineyards and Winery occupies a pivotal place in the history of wine criticism: the 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was the first American wine to receive a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker, a milestone that transformed both the winery and the industry. Winemaker Nils Venge made that historic wine, and while Venge has since moved on to his own Saddleback Cellars, the impact of that score reverberates through Napa Valley to this day. Founded in 1982 by Dennis and Judy Groth, the estate occupies 165 acres of prime Oakville benchland, surrounded by neighbors whose names read like a roster of California's greatest wines.

The vineyard sits on the Oakville Cross Road, one of the most coveted stretches of agricultural land in the Western Hemisphere. The alluvial soils, deposited by Napa Creek over millennia, are deep, well-drained, and rich in the gravel and clay that Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in. The Oakville climate provides consistent warmth during the growing season with cooling evening breezes from the bay, creating conditions that ripen Cabernet fully while preserving the acidity and tannin structure that give great wines their aging potential. The Groth vineyard also includes blocks of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, providing white wine options alongside the famous reds.

Winemaker Michael Weis has guided the wines since 2001, maintaining the estate's commitment to Oakville Cabernet while evolving the style for contemporary palates. The Reserve Cabernet, successor to the 100-point legend, is produced only in exceptional vintages and represents the best lots from the estate's oldest vines. The estate Cabernet Sauvignon, released annually, delivers consistent Oakville quality at a more accessible price point. The Sauvignon Blanc, fermented in a combination of steel and oak, is one of the better white wines produced in the appellation.

The tasting room is a sleek, modern space set among the estate vineyards on the Oakville Cross Road. Tastings are offered at the indoor bar or on the outdoor terrace, with options ranging from a standard flight to a reserve experience that includes the flagship wines alongside library vintages. The staff are knowledgeable about both the wines and the estate's place in the history of wine criticism, and the conversation often turns to the significance of Parker's 100-point score and its impact on the industry.

Groth's 100-point milestone changed the wine world by demonstrating the power of a single score to transform a winery's reputation overnight. Before that score, Parker's influence was growing but not yet dominant; after it, the 100-point scale became the definitive measure of wine quality in America. Whether one views that development as positive or negative, Groth's role in the story is undeniable. The wines, fortunately, continue to justify the attention, with the Oakville Cabernet delivering consistent quality from one of the appellation's most storied vineyard sites.
