About Far Niente Winery

Far Niente Winery is one of Napa Valley's most beautiful estates, a meticulously restored 1885 stone winery that produces two of the valley's most consistently excellent wines: an Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon and a Napa Valley Chardonnay. The name, Italian for "without a care," was chosen by founder John Benson, a gold rush-era fortune heir who built the winery as a monument to the good life. After Prohibition shuttered the estate, the building stood empty for 60 years before Gil Nickel, an Oklahoma nursery owner, purchased it in 1979 and spent three years restoring it to its original grandeur.

The estate encompasses 150 acres of prime Oakville benchland, one of the most coveted vineyard addresses in Napa Valley. The Martin Stelling Vineyard, planted directly behind the winery, has been in continuous production since the restoration and produces Cabernet of remarkable consistency vintage after vintage. Additional vineyard holdings in Coombsville provide the Chardonnay fruit, with the cooler growing conditions there preserving the acidity and elegance that define the Far Niente style.

Winemaker Nicole Marchesi produces just two wines under the Far Niente label, a discipline that is increasingly rare in a valley where most estates offer ten or more bottlings. The Cabernet is a study in polish and restraint, a wine that delivers Oakville's characteristic richness without heaviness. The Chardonnay, barrel-fermented and aged in French oak, balances creaminess with bright citrus acidity in a style that has earned it a permanent place on the wine lists of the country's finest restaurants. The sister labels Dolce (a late-harvest dessert wine) and EnRoute (a Russian River Pinot Noir) extend the portfolio without diluting the core identity.

The tasting experience at Far Niente is among the most elegant in the valley. The estate tour includes a walk through the beautifully landscaped gardens (designed by Gil Nickel, whose nursery background shows in every detail), the restored stone winery, the barrel caves, and the classic car collection housed in the carriage house. Tastings are seated and intimate, with pairings of cheese and chocolate alongside the wines. The $95 tasting fee reflects the exclusivity of the experience.

Far Niente's genius lies in its restraint. In a valley that rewards ambition and expansion, Far Niente has resisted the temptation to add more wines, more vineyards, or more tasting options. Two wines, made well, year after year, from the same vineyards. The consistency of this approach has built one of the most loyal followings in Napa Valley, with an allocation list that stretches for years. For visitors, the experience distills everything appealing about wine country into a single, impeccable afternoon.
