About Cakebread Cellars

Cakebread Cellars is a Rutherford institution built on the twin passions of wine and food. Jack and Dolores Cakebread purchased their ranch on Highway 29 in 1973, drawn to Napa Valley not by the wine industry's glamour but by the agricultural lifestyle they wanted for their family. Jack, a professional photographer, had been shooting vineyard images for a book when he fell in love with the land itself. The Cakebreads planted their first vines that same year and have been farming in Rutherford continuously for over five decades.

The estate spans an impressive 560 acres of vineyards across multiple Napa appellations, from the warm Rutherford benchland to cooler sites in Carneros and Anderson Valley. This geographic diversity gives the winemaking team access to a wide range of microclimates and soil types, allowing the portfolio to include everything from crisp Sauvignon Blanc to rich Cabernet Sauvignon without straying from estate-grown fruit. The vineyard management is certified sustainable under the Napa Green program, reflecting the family's long-term commitment to the health of the land.

Winemaker Stephanie Jacobs oversees a portfolio anchored by two wines that have become synonymous with the Cakebread name: the Napa Valley Chardonnay and the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The Chardonnay, one of the best-selling premium white wines in American restaurants, balances richness with freshness in a style that has remained remarkably consistent for decades. The Cabernet delivers Rutherford character with polish and accessibility. Beyond these flagships, the Dancing Bear Ranch Cabernet from Howell Mountain and the reserve bottlings offer deeper, more complex expressions of the estate's range.

Dolores Cakebread's influence on the winery's culinary program cannot be overstated. She established the American Harvest Workshop in 1987, an annual event that brings together winemakers, chefs, and food writers to explore the relationship between wine and food. The tasting room experience reflects this food-first philosophy, with many options including food pairings that demonstrate how the wines come alive at the table. The winery grounds are immaculate, with a demonstration garden that supplies the kitchen.

Cakebread Cellars represents the best of family winemaking in Napa Valley: consistent quality, genuine hospitality, and a deep connection to the land. In an era when many Napa wineries have been acquired by large corporations, the Cakebread family's continued ownership and hands-on involvement sets them apart. The winery produces roughly 75,000 cases annually, a scale large enough to be widely available but small enough to maintain the personal touch that defines the brand.
