About ZD Wines

ZD Wines is a family-owned estate that has been producing rich, age-worthy wines in Napa Valley since 1969, building a loyal following through consistent quality and the kind of personal hospitality that only a genuine family operation can deliver. Founded by Gino and Rosa Lee Zepponi and Norman and Rosa Lee de Leuze (the "Z" and "D" of the name), the winery was one of the first to produce Pinot Noir in the Carneros region and has since expanded to include excellent Cabernet Sauvignon and the Chardonnay that has become the estate's calling card.

The estate includes 60 acres of vineyard in Rutherford and Carneros, with the Rutherford vineyards producing the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Carneros site providing the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit. The dual-appellation sourcing gives the winemaking team access to both warm and cool growing conditions, allowing for a portfolio that spans the full spectrum of Napa Valley styles. The Rutherford terroir produces Cabernet of classic structure, while the Carneros climate preserves the freshness and acidity that make the white wines so food-friendly.

Winemaker Chris Cree produces a portfolio anchored by the Napa Valley Chardonnay, a wine that has earned a devoted following for its rich, barrel-fermented style balanced by natural Carneros acidity. The reserve Chardonnay adds depth and complexity, with extended lees aging contributing texture and savory character. The Cabernet Sauvignon is structured and earthy, showing Rutherford character with the firm tannins necessary for aging. The Pinot Noir, from the estate's original Carneros plantings, is a reminder of ZD's pioneering role in the appellation.

The tasting room on the Silverado Trail in Rutherford is warm and welcoming, decorated with family photographs and memorabilia that tell the ZD story. The de Leuze family (who now operate the winery) are frequently present, bringing a personal touch that distinguishes ZD from larger, more corporate operations. Tastings include current releases and, when available, library vintages that demonstrate the wines' aging potential. At $55, the tasting is fairly priced for the quality and the family atmosphere.

ZD's longevity in a valley of frequent ownership changes is its most impressive achievement. While neighboring estates have been bought and sold multiple times, the de Leuze family has maintained continuous ownership and hands-on management for over five decades. This stability translates into wines of remarkable consistency and a tasting experience that feels genuinely familial rather than commercially polished.
