About Honig Vineyard & Winery

Honig Vineyard and Winery is proof that you do not need to make Cabernet Sauvignon to build a great reputation in Napa Valley. While the estate does produce an excellent Cab, its fame rests on its Sauvignon Blanc, widely considered one of the finest examples of the variety in California. The winery traces its history to 1964, when Louis Honig purchased a vineyard on the Rutherford benchland. His grandson Michael Honig transformed the family grape-growing operation into a winery in the 1980s, and the family has been farming the same 67 acres of Rutherford land for six decades.

The vineyard sits on classic Rutherford benchland, with well-drained alluvial soils deposited by Napa Creek. The 67-acre estate is certified sustainable and powered entirely by solar energy, making Honig one of the most environmentally progressive wineries in the valley. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, with the warmer blocks dedicated to Cabernet and the cooler sections producing the crisp, aromatic fruit that makes the Sauvignon Blanc so distinctive.

Winemaker Kristin Belair crafts a Sauvignon Blanc that has won more awards and accolades than perhaps any other California example of the variety. The wine is partially barrel-fermented and partially fermented in stainless steel, creating a blend that combines the richness of oak aging with the crispness of tank fermentation. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc that is simultaneously complex and refreshing, a wine that can stand alongside a fine white Burgundy at dinner or a cold beer at a backyard barbecue. The Cabernet, while less famous, is a polished, structured wine that delivers genuine Rutherford character.

The tasting room on Highway 29 is intimate and personal, reflecting the family-run scale of the operation. Tastings are led by knowledgeable staff who can speak to every aspect of the farming and winemaking. The sustainable farming practices are a frequent topic of conversation, and visitors who are interested can tour the solar installation and learn about the estate's zero-waste initiatives. At $45, the tasting fee is reasonable for wines of this quality.

Honig's importance to Napa Valley lies in its demonstration that great wine does not require great scale or great expense. The Honig family farms 67 acres, makes two wines, and does both exceptionally well. In a valley where bigger, rarer, and more expensive are often equated with better, Honig offers a quiet counterargument: that the most rewarding wines are often the ones made with the most focus and the least ego.
