About Vine Cliff Winery

Vine Cliff Winery is one of Napa Valley's most dramatic resurrection stories, an estate originally established in 1871 that fell into complete ruin during the decades following Prohibition before being painstakingly restored to its original glory. The original stone winery and caves, built by German immigrant John C. Weinberger, were among the largest in the valley in the 19th century. After Prohibition shut down production, the property was abandoned, and the winery building slowly crumbled over the following decades. In 1985, Charles Sweeney purchased the ruins and began the laborious process of restoration, eventually returning Vine Cliff to active wine production from its 80 acres of Oakville vineyard.

The 80-acre estate sits on prime Oakville terroir, with the vineyard benefiting from the same alluvial soils and warm growing conditions that have made the appellation synonymous with great Cabernet. The restoration included not just the winery building but the vineyard itself, which was replanted with modern clonal selections on appropriate rootstocks. The caves, originally dug by hand in the 1870s, were restored and expanded, creating barrel storage that honors the estate's 19th-century origins while meeting modern winemaking needs.

Winemaker Robert Swain produces a portfolio that includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot, each expressing the Oakville terroir through the lens of the restored estate. The Cabernet is the flagship, a wine that delivers genuine Oakville richness with the structure necessary for aging. The Chardonnay, from cooler vineyard sections, is balanced and food-friendly. The prices are moderate for Oakville, reflecting the Sweeney family's desire to make the wines accessible.

Tastings are by appointment and include a tour of the restored caves, which provide both an atmospheric tasting setting and a tangible connection to the estate's 1871 origins. The hand-dug tunnels, lined with aging barrels, create one of the most historically evocative settings in the valley. The $60 fee includes the cave tour and the full portfolio.

Vine Cliff matters because its restoration preserved a piece of Napa Valley's 19th-century heritage that would otherwise have been lost. The caves, the stone walls, and the vineyard connect modern visitors to the era when German, Italian, and Chinese immigrants built the valley's wine industry by hand. Every bottle from Vine Cliff carries that history.
