A family estate in the Oak Knoll District producing elegant, cool-climate wines from their contiguous vineyard. The historic wooden winery is a Napa landmark.
Trefethen Family Vineyards is the Oak Knoll District's founding estate, the winery that proved this cooler, southern corner of Napa Valley could produce wines of world-class quality. Gene and Catherine Trefethen purchased the historic Eschol ranch in 1968, a property that included a remarkable three-story wooden gravity-flow winery built in 1886, the only one of its kind remaining in Napa Valley. The Trefethen family restored the building and began producing estate wines, eventually petitioning to create the Oak Knoll District AVA to distinguish their terroir from the warmer appellations to the north.
The estate is one of the largest contiguous vineyards in Napa Valley at 600 acres, all of it surrounding the historic winery in a single block. The Oak Knoll District's position at the southern end of the valley, where cooling breezes from San Pablo Bay funnel into the valley floor, creates growing conditions that are significantly cooler than St. Helena or Calistoga. This climate advantage produces wines of natural freshness and balance, with lower alcohol levels and brighter acidity than their warmer-climate counterparts. The diversity of the estate allows the family to grow everything from Riesling and Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon on the same property.
Winemaker Bryan Kays works with this vast estate to produce a range of wines that showcases the Oak Knoll District's versatility. The estate Cabernet Sauvignon is elegant rather than massive, with the hallmark freshness that distinguishes Oak Knoll wines from their northern neighbors. The Chardonnay is one of the most food-friendly in the valley, with crisp acidity and restrained oak. The dry Riesling, a rarity in Napa, is a beloved anomaly that demonstrates what the cooler climate can achieve. The Dragon's Tooth red blend, named after a volcanic formation on the property, has become a popular introduction to the estate.
The tasting experience takes place in and around the historic 1886 winery building, a stunning structure that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The wooden building, with its three-story gravity-flow design, is a testament to 19th-century winemaking ingenuity. Tastings range from a garden terrace flight to an in-depth estate tour that covers the history of the property and the family's role in creating the Oak Knoll District AVA. The gardens and lawn are open for picnicking, making it one of the most relaxed settings in the valley.
Trefethen is important because it expanded the definition of Napa Valley beyond Cabernet Sauvignon and the warm mid-valley appellations. By championing the Oak Knoll District and demonstrating that Napa could produce world-class Chardonnay, Riesling, and Merlot alongside its famous Cabernet, the Trefethen family helped create a more complete and diverse wine region. The estate remains family-owned and operated, with the third generation now involved, ensuring continuity of vision for decades to come.
