About Stag's Leap Wine Cellars

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars occupies one of the most significant pieces of ground in the history of American wine. In 1976, winemaker Warren Winiarski's 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon defeated four of France's greatest Bordeaux chateaux in the Judgment of Paris, a blind tasting organized in Paris that forever changed the wine world's perception of California. That single event transformed Napa Valley from a regional curiosity into a global contender, and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars from a small startup into a living monument to what American wine could achieve.

The estate spans 150 acres in the Stags Leap District, an appellation on the eastern side of the valley defined by dramatic volcanic palisades that trap afternoon heat and create a microclimate uniquely suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The district's wines are known for their combination of power and elegance, a quality that critics often describe as an "iron fist in a velvet glove." The S.L.V. and FAY vineyards, both owned by the winery, are planted on rocky, well-drained soils that stress the vines into producing fruit of extraordinary concentration and aromatic complexity.

Current winemaker Marcus Notaro carries the weight of that history with remarkable grace. He produces wines that honor the estate's legacy of elegance while reflecting modern vineyard knowledge. The flagship Cask 23 Cabernet, a blend of the finest lots from S.L.V. and FAY, is consistently among the most acclaimed wines in Napa Valley. The S.L.V. and FAY vineyard-designate bottlings offer distinct expressions of their respective sites, with S.L.V. showing more structure and FAY more perfume.

The tasting experience is appropriately reverent without being stuffy. Visitors can choose from several tasting options, ranging from a classic flight in the modern tasting room to an immersive cave tour that includes library vintages. The most popular experience pairs current releases with the story of the Judgment of Paris, allowing visitors to taste the lineage of the wine that changed everything. The vineyard views from the terrace, with the volcanic palisades rising behind, are among the most photographed in the valley.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is more than a winery; it is a place of pilgrimage for anyone who cares about the history of wine. The Judgment of Paris did not just validate one winemaker's gamble. It validated an entire region's potential and opened the door for every Napa Valley producer that followed. Tasting here, surrounded by the vineyards that produced the wine that changed the world, is one of the most meaningful experiences available in American wine country.
