A family-run Spring Mountain estate since 1971, known for producing one of California's finest dry Rieslings alongside structured mountain Cabernet.
Smith-Madrone Vineyards is one of Spring Mountain's most enduring and unpretentious estates, a family-run operation that has been producing exceptional wines at remarkably fair prices since 1971. Founded by brothers Stu and Charles Smith, who cleared the land by hand and planted their vineyard on a remote mountainside at 1,800 feet, Smith-Madrone has never chased trends, raised prices to match its neighbors, or hired a consulting winemaker to polish its image. The brothers make the wine themselves, as they have for over five decades, producing a portfolio anchored by what many consider the finest dry Riesling in California.
The estate covers 35 acres of steep, terraced vineyard on Spring Mountain's western slope, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, and Chardonnay. The elevation, aspect, and volcanic soils create growing conditions that are ideally suited to each variety: the warmest blocks for Cabernet, the coolest for Riesling, and the middle ground for Chardonnay. The mountain terrain makes farming labor-intensive and expensive, but the resulting wines have a concentration and mineral character that valley-floor vineyards cannot replicate.
Charles Smith makes the wines with a straightforward, hands-off philosophy that trusts the vineyard to deliver quality without heavy-handed cellar intervention. The Riesling is the star, a bone-dry, mineral-driven wine that stands alongside the finest examples from Alsace or Austria. The Cabernet Sauvignon is classic Spring Mountain: dark, tannic, and built for aging, with a wildness that reflects the mountain's untamed character. The Chardonnay, unoaked and precise, showcases the variety at its most refreshing. All three wines are priced well below what their quality and mountain pedigree would justify.
The tasting room is a modest structure on the mountaintop, as unpretentious as the brothers who built it. Visitors drive up a steep, winding road to arrive at a setting that feels worlds away from the polished tasting rooms on Highway 29. Tastings are intimate and often conducted by Stu or Charles themselves, with conversation ranging from viticulture to mountain wildlife to the history of Spring Mountain. At $40, the tasting is one of the best values on the mountain.
Smith-Madrone represents the pioneer spirit that built Napa Valley's mountain wine culture. The Smith brothers did not inherit their vineyard or purchase it with corporate wealth; they cleared it with chainsaws and planted it by hand, and they have tended it for over 50 years with the same stubbornness and dedication. The wines are proof that great wine does not require great marketing, just great dirt and the patience to let it speak.
