About Seavey Vineyard

Seavey Vineyard is a hidden estate tucked into the hills of Conn Valley east of St. Helena, a secluded property that produces powerful Cabernets from a site whose isolation has kept it off most visitors' radar despite four decades of consistently excellent wine. Founded in 1990 by the Seavey family, the estate occupies 40 acres of hillside vineyard in the narrow canyon that separates St. Helena from the Vaca Range, a microclimate that combines the warmth of St. Helena with the cooling influence of the mountain ridges above.

The 40-acre vineyard is planted on volcanic and alluvial soils in the Conn Valley, where the canyon's narrow profile channels cool air down from the ridgetops while the south-facing slopes absorb daytime heat. The combination creates a microclimate that produces Cabernet of unusual power and depth, with the hillside positioning providing the drainage and stress that concentrate flavors in the grapes. The estate also grows Merlot and Chardonnay, extending the portfolio beyond the red wines that the site naturally excels at.

Winemaker Jim McCann produces Cabernets that reflect the Conn Valley's distinctive character: more powerful and tannic than the typical St. Helena benchland wine, with a mineral intensity that reflects the volcanic influence of the surrounding hills. The wine demands years of cellaring before it reveals its full complexity. The Merlot provides a softer, more approachable alternative. The Chardonnay, from the estate's cooler sections, is balanced and food-friendly.

Tastings are by appointment and require the drive into Conn Valley, a scenic journey through oak-studded hills that filters out casual visitors. The estate's seclusion is part of its charm, and the tasting experience is intimate and personal. The $75 fee includes the full portfolio and one of the most peaceful settings in the valley.

Seavey represents the hidden Napa Valley that exists beyond the highway corridors, where seclusion and exceptional terroir combine to produce wines that reward the effort of discovery. The Conn Valley setting, surrounded by hills and forest, creates a sense of isolation that is increasingly rare in the bustling valley.
