About Sawyer Cellars

Sawyer Cellars is a family estate on the Rutherford benchland producing classic, food-friendly Cabernets in a style that prioritizes balance and drinkability over power and point scores. Founded in 1994 by Charles Sawyer, the estate occupies 28 acres of the benchland that has made Rutherford one of the most respected Cabernet appellations in the world. The winery's deliberate modesty, both in pricing and in style, has earned a loyal following among visitors who value the traditional Rutherford approach over the modern trend toward bigger, bolder wines.

The 28-acre vineyard sits on the classic Rutherford benchland, where the deep alluvial soils and warm growing season produce Cabernet of the earthy, mineral character that local winemakers call "Rutherford Dust." The vineyard has been sustainably farmed for decades, with the benchland terroir providing the natural quality that allows the winemaker to take a restrained approach in the cellar. The estate also grows Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, rounding out a portfolio designed for the dinner table.

Winemaker Brad Warner crafts wines that let the Rutherford terroir speak without shouting. The estate Cabernet is medium-bodied and structured, with the earthy complexity that defines the appellation's best wines, at an alcohol level that allows it to accompany food without overwhelming the meal. The Merlot is soft and aromatic, and the Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and refreshing. Prices across the portfolio are notably moderate for estate-grown Rutherford wines.

The tasting room on the estate is welcoming and personal, with the benchland vineyard visible from the terrace. Walk-in visitors are welcome, and the $45 fee includes a relaxed tasting of the full portfolio.

Sawyer demonstrates that Rutherford Cabernet does not need to be a blockbuster to be excellent. The restrained style and moderate pricing offer an alternative to the appellation's more aggressive producers, and the wines' food-friendliness makes them genuinely useful at the dinner table rather than merely impressive on a scorecard.
