About Beaulieu Vineyard

Beaulieu Vineyard, universally known as BV, is one of the pillars on which modern Napa Valley wine was built. Founded in 1900 by Georges de Latour, a French chemist who emigrated to California with a vision of producing wines to rival those of his homeland, BV became the most influential winery in the valley during the mid-20th century. De Latour's most consequential decision was hiring Andre Tchelistcheff, a Russian-born, French-trained enologist, as winemaker in 1938. Tchelistcheff transformed not just BV but the entire California wine industry, introducing cold fermentation, malolactic fermentation, and frost protection techniques that are now standard practice.

The estate encompasses a vast 1,100 acres of vineyard land, with the crown jewel being Vineyard No. 1 and Vineyard No. 2 in the heart of Rutherford. These blocks, planted by de Latour in the early 1900s, are among the most historic vineyard sites in the valley and the source of the legendary Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. The Private Reserve has been produced continuously since 1936, making it one of the oldest continuously produced Cabernet Sauvignons in California. The vineyard's Rutherford benchland soils produce the earthy, mineral quality that locals call "Rutherford Dust."

Winemaker Trevor Durling carries the weight of this history while pushing the wines forward. The Georges de Latour Private Reserve remains the flagship, a wine that regularly earns scores above 95 points and ages gracefully for decades. The Clone series, launched in recent years, showcases individual Cabernet clones planted in BV's oldest vineyards, offering a fascinating window into how genetics and terroir interact. The broader portfolio includes approachable Napa Valley and Carneros bottlings that deliver solid quality at moderate price points.

The tasting room on Highway 29 in Rutherford offers several experiences, from a walk-in tasting of current releases to the Reserve Room experience featuring the Private Reserve alongside library vintages. The most compelling option is the Heritage tasting, which traces BV's history through its wines, placing each bottle in the context of the innovations that Andre Tchelistcheff introduced. The winery's location in the heart of Rutherford puts it within easy reach of several other landmark estates.

BV's significance to Napa Valley is foundational. Andre Tchelistcheff trained a generation of winemakers who went on to lead their own estates, including Mike Grgich, Warren Winiarski, and Robert Mondavi's early team. The ripple effects of his work at BV shaped the entire California wine industry. For visitors, tasting the Georges de Latour Private Reserve is tasting a direct line of continuity that stretches from the early 20th century to the present day, a lineage that few American wines can claim.
