A biodynamic Rutherford estate producing a single proprietary red blend from 280 acres of varied terrain. The crescent-shaped, earth-integrated winery is a masterwork of sustainable design.
Quintessa is a biodynamic Rutherford estate that produces a single proprietary red blend from 280 acres of extraordinarily varied terrain, creating a wine that captures the full diversity of the Napa Valley landscape in a single bottle. Founded in 1990 by Agustin and Valeria Huneeus (the Chilean-born former president of Concha y Toro and co-founder of Franciscan Estate), Quintessa was conceived as a "first growth" project from the beginning: a single wine from a single estate, crafted without compromise. The 280-acre property, which wraps around a small lake and encompasses hillside, benchland, and alluvial terroir, is one of the most topographically diverse single-vineyard sites in the valley.
The estate's terrain includes five distinct soil types across elevations ranging from the valley floor to 500 feet, providing the winemaking team with an extraordinary range of flavors and textures from a single property. The hillside blocks contribute structure and minerality, the benchland provides richness and generosity, and the alluvial sections add aromatic complexity. The entire estate is farmed biodynamically, with the Demeter-certified program reflecting the Huneeus family's belief that healthy soil produces the most expressive wines. The biodynamic practices include cover cropping, composting, and the use of natural preparations timed to celestial cycles.
Winemaker Rebekah Wineburg crafts the single Quintessa wine from the best lots across the estate, blending the five soil types and multiple elevations into a wine that is more complex than any single block could produce. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant but includes Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere in proportions that shift with each vintage. The wine is structured and layered, with a mineral backbone from the hillside fruit, generosity from the benchland, and aromatic lift from the alluvial sections. The seamlessness of the blend is the winemaker's greatest achievement.
The winery building, designed by Walker Warner Architects, is one of the most beautiful in the valley, with a low profile that nestles into the hillside and a terrace that overlooks the estate's lake and vineyard. Tastings are by appointment and intimate, with guided experiences that explore how the estate's diverse terroir is assembled into the final blend. The $125 tasting fee includes the current and library vintages.
Quintessa demonstrates the power of assemblage: the idea that a wine blended from multiple terroirs within a single estate can achieve a complexity that no single vineyard block can match. The biodynamic farming, the topographic diversity, and the single-wine focus combine to produce one of Napa Valley's most intellectually satisfying wines, a bottle that rewards contemplation as richly as it rewards the senses.
