Promontory is the third and most enigmatic estate from Bill Harlan, the man behind Harlan Estate and Bond, representing his exploration of an untamed, wild hillside property on the western mountains above Oakville that he believes has the potential to produce one of Napa Valley's greatest wines. Founded in 2008, Promontory occupies 80 acres of rugged terrain that was largely unplanted when Harlan acquired it, requiring years of clearing, soil analysis, and trial planting before the first vines went into the ground. The name evokes the estate's prominent ridgeline position overlooking the valley floor.

The 80-acre property sits on the western hills above Oakville, at elevations and exposures that differ dramatically from the valley-floor vineyards that produce Harlan Estate. The terrain is wild and forested, with vineyard clearings carved into the hillside at various elevations and aspects. The soils are a complex mosaic of volcanic rock, clay, and alluvium, varying significantly across the property and providing the diversity of flavors that Harlan believes is essential to a great wine. The estate is still being developed, with new vineyard blocks being planted as the team's understanding of the property deepens.

Winemaker Will Harlan, Bill's son, is crafting the Promontory wines as the estate evolves, producing a proprietary red blend that captures the property's wild, untamed character. The wine is more rustic and mineral than the polished Harlan Estate, reflecting the hillside terroir's raw intensity. The style is deliberately different from the other Harlan wines, with a savory, earthy quality that distinguishes it from the richer, more opulent valley-floor bottlings. Promontory does not maintain a public tasting room and is available only through a select mailing list.
