About Cardinale Winery

Cardinale Winery produces a single wine each year: a proprietary Cabernet Sauvignon that represents the pinnacle of what Napa Valley's mountain vineyards can achieve. Founded in 1982 as part of the Jess Jackson family's portfolio (now Jackson Family Wines), Cardinale was conceived as a grand cru project, a wine that would blend the finest lots from the most prestigious mountain sites in the valley into a single, definitive expression of Napa terroir. It is one of the few Napa wineries that produces only one red wine, a discipline that reflects an unwavering commitment to quality over quantity.

The wine draws from a network of mountain vineyard sites across Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, and Diamond Mountain, each contributing distinct characteristics to the final blend. Christopher Carpenter, who has served as winemaker since 2001, selects the finest lots from each site and assembles them into a blend that captures the essence of Napa's mountainous terrain. The mountain fruit provides structure, concentration, and minerality that valley-floor vineyards rarely achieve, while the blending of multiple sites creates a complexity that no single vineyard can match.

Christopher Carpenter approaches each vintage as a new composition, adjusting the proportions of mountain fruit to reflect what each site has offered. In some years, Mount Veeder's wild intensity dominates; in others, Howell Mountain's structured elegance takes the lead. The wine is aged for 22 months in new French oak before spending an additional year in bottle before release. The resulting wine is powerful but not heavy, concentrated but not dense, a mountain Cabernet that achieves the rare quality of being both impressive and drinkable.

The tasting experience at Cardinale is appropriately exclusive. The winery, housed in a sleek stone and glass building in Oakville, receives visitors by appointment only for tastings that pair the current vintage with one or two library vintages. The small-group format allows for genuine conversation with the tasting hosts, who are deeply knowledgeable about both the wine and the mountain vineyards that produce it. The $125 tasting fee reflects the wine's stature and the intimacy of the experience.

Cardinale matters because it demonstrates the potential of blending in a valley that often fetishizes single-vineyard wines. By drawing from the best mountain sites across the entire appellation, Carpenter creates a wine that is greater than any of its individual components. The result is a Cabernet that speaks not of one place but of an entire landscape, a wine that captures the idea of Napa Valley mountain terroir in its purest form.
