About Pina Napa Valley

Pina Napa Valley is a multi-generational family estate that quietly produces excellent wines from vineyards on both Howell Mountain and the Rutherford benchland, giving visitors the rare opportunity to taste how the same family interprets two of Napa's most contrasting terroirs. The Pina family has been farming in Napa Valley since 1927, making them one of the longest-tenured agricultural families in the region. The winery was formalized in 1979, but the family's connection to the land stretches back nearly a century, through Prohibition, the modern wine era, and every transformation the valley has undergone.

The estate includes 14 acres of vineyard divided between two dramatically different sites: a Howell Mountain parcel at 1,400 feet elevation, where volcanic soils and intense sunlight produce Cabernet of mountain power and mineral complexity, and a Rutherford benchland vineyard, where deep alluvial soils create wines of warmer, more generous character. This dual-appellation approach is unusual for a family producer of Pina's scale, and the side-by-side comparison of the two Cabernets provides one of the most instructive terroir lessons available in the valley.

Winemaker Anna Monticelli crafts vineyard-designate Cabernets from each site, allowing the terroir differences to speak clearly. The Howell Mountain Cabernet is firm, tannic, and mineral-driven, demanding years of cellaring before it softens and reveals its full complexity. The Rutherford Cabernet is rounder and more immediately approachable, with the earthy "Rutherford Dust" character that defines the appellation. A Cabernet Franc from the Rutherford vineyard adds aromatic complexity to the portfolio.

The tasting room on Silverado Trail offers a personal, family-run experience that reflects the estate's multi-generational heritage. Tastings often include the side-by-side mountain-versus-valley comparison, which the staff use as a teaching tool for explaining how terroir shapes wine. The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious, with family stories woven into the tasting alongside the wines. At $55, the experience provides excellent value for two-appellation Cabernets of genuine quality.

Pina represents the farming-family backbone of Napa Valley, the multi-generational operations that have been working the land long before the valley became famous and long after the latest trends have faded. The family's nearly century-long connection to the soil gives the wines a rootedness and authenticity that no amount of marketing or architectural spectacle can replicate.
