About OVID Napa Valley

OVID Napa Valley is one of the most intellectually ambitious wineries in the valley, a place where classical philosophy meets mountain viticulture at 1,600 feet on Pritchard Hill. Founded in 2000 by Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson, the estate takes its name from the Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso, whose Metamorphoses explored the theme of constant transformation. The name is not an affectation but a genuine statement of philosophy: the wines are conceived as expressions of change, with each vintage reflecting the unique character of its growing season rather than conforming to a house style.

The estate occupies 15 acres on the eastern slope of Pritchard Hill, one of Napa Valley's most coveted vineyard addresses. The steep, rocky hillside sits above the fog line, receiving intense morning sunlight and cooling afternoon breezes from the valley below. The soils are volcanic in origin, thin and well-drained, forcing vine roots to penetrate deep into fractured rock in search of water and nutrients. This natural stress produces fruit of extraordinary concentration and mineral complexity, qualities that distinguish Pritchard Hill wines from their valley-floor neighbors.

Winemaker Austin Peterson crafts three wines from the estate: Hexameter, a Cabernet-dominant Bordeaux blend; Experiment, a wine that changes its composition each vintage based on what the vineyard offers; and a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The winemaking is precise and restrained, with extended maceration and aging in French oak allowing the mountain terroir to express itself without heavy-handed extraction. Peterson approaches each vintage as a new problem to solve, which keeps the wines surprising and intellectually engaging.

Tastings at OVID are by appointment only and limited to small groups, creating an intimate experience that matches the scale of the production. Visitors are typically hosted in the winery's library or on the terrace overlooking the vineyard, with views stretching across the valley to the Mayacamas Range. The tasting includes current releases alongside older vintages that demonstrate how the wines evolve with age. The conversation tends toward the philosophical, as the staff are genuinely engaged with the ideas behind the wines.

OVID is not for everyone, and that is entirely the point. The wines are expensive, the production is tiny, and the intellectual framework can feel precious to visitors who just want a nice glass of Cabernet. But for those who believe that wine can be a medium for ideas as much as a source of pleasure, OVID offers one of the most stimulating experiences in Napa Valley. It is a winery that asks you to think as much as you taste, and the wines reward that engagement generously.
