A small estate producing polished, site-specific wines from vineyards in both Calistoga (Blueline) and St. Helena. The Hourglass Estate Cabernet from the narrow, hourglass-shaped vineyard is exceptional.
Hourglass Wines is a small, dual-estate producer that crafts polished, site-specific wines from vineyards in both Calistoga and St. Helena, with the hourglass shape of the brand representing the passage of time that transforms grapes into wine. Founded in 1997 by Jeff and Carolyn Smith, the estate began with the Blueline Vineyard in Calistoga before adding the Hourglass Estate Vineyard in St. Helena, creating a portfolio that compares two distinct Napa Valley terroirs through the same winemaking approach.
The Blueline Vineyard in Calistoga covers 12 acres of benchland near the estate winery, named for the blue line on old topographic maps that indicates a seasonal creek. The warm Calistoga climate and volcanic soils produce Cabernet of bold, concentrated character. The Hourglass Estate Vineyard in St. Helena occupies a different terroir, with alluvial soils and a slightly cooler microclimate that produces wine of greater elegance and finesse. The two vineyards function as a study in contrasts, demonstrating how terroir shapes wine even within the same appellation.
Winemaker Tony Biagi produces vineyard-designate wines from each estate, allowing the distinct character of Calistoga and St. Helena to express themselves without the obscuring effect of blending. The Blueline Cabernet is powerful and dark, with the intensity that warm Calistoga fruit delivers. The Hourglass Estate Cabernet is more structured and refined, with the elegance that St. Helena's cooler conditions allow. A Merlot and a Sauvignon Blanc round out the portfolio, each site-specific and crafted to showcase its origin.
The tasting room on the Calistoga estate offers a refined experience focused on the side-by-side comparison of the two vineyard-designate Cabernets. The visual contrast between the wines is often as dramatic as the flavor differences, with the Blueline showing deeper color and the Hourglass Estate showing brighter aromatics. The intimate scale of the tasting room, combined with the dual-vineyard concept, makes Hourglass one of the most educational tasting experiences in the valley. The $90 fee includes the full portfolio.
Hourglass offers one of the clearest demonstrations of terroir available in Napa Valley. By producing the same variety from two different sites using the same winemaking approach, the estate isolates the vineyard as the variable and allows visitors to taste the difference that soil, climate, and geography make. It is a lesson in wine geography that is both intellectually satisfying and delicious.
