One of Napa's oldest wineries, producing Cabernet since 1886. Home to the legendary Bosché vineyard, one of the first single-vineyard designations in California.
Freemark Abbey is one of the grand old names of Napa Valley winemaking, an estate that has been producing wine since 1886 and played a pivotal role in establishing Napa's reputation as a world-class wine region. The winery's Cabernet Sauvignon was included in the 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting alongside Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and Ridge Monte Bello, placing among the top California wines against the best of Bordeaux. The estate takes its name from a combination of the first names of three former owners (Charles Freeman, Mark Foster, and Abbey Ahern) rather than from any monastic connection, though the stone building on Highway 29 has a suitably ecclesiastical presence.
The estate includes 300 acres of vineyards across St. Helena and surrounding appellations, with the crown jewel being the Bosché Vineyard, one of the first single-vineyard designate Cabernets produced in Napa Valley. The Bosché Vineyard, planted in the 1960s by John Bosché on the Rutherford benchland, has been the source of Freemark Abbey's most acclaimed wines for over five decades. The site's deep alluvial soils and warm Rutherford climate produce Cabernet of classic structure and concentration. The estate's Sycamore Vineyard in Rutherford provides fruit for a second vineyard-designate bottling.
Winemaker Kristy Melton works with these historic vineyard sources to produce wines that balance tradition and modernity. The Bosché Vineyard Cabernet remains the flagship, a wine that delivers the earthy, mineral character of Rutherford with the firm tannic structure necessary for long aging. The Sycamore Vineyard Cabernet offers a softer, more immediately approachable expression of the same appellation. The Chardonnay, from cooler Carneros vineyards, provides a crisp, balanced white wine that complements the red wine program.
The tasting room is housed in the historic stone winery building on Highway 29, one of the most recognizable structures in St. Helena. The interior has been thoughtfully updated while preserving the building's 19th-century character, with exposed stone walls and wooden beams creating a setting that connects visitors to the estate's long history. Tastings include current releases and, when available, library vintages from the Bosché Vineyard. At $50, the experience offers excellent value for wines with this pedigree.
Freemark Abbey's significance to Napa Valley lies in its continuity. While many of the valley's famous names from the 1970s have been sold, rebranded, or absorbed into larger corporations, Freemark Abbey has maintained its identity and its commitment to the vineyard sources that made its reputation. The Bosché Vineyard Cabernet is one of the longest-running single-vineyard programs in Napa Valley, and each new vintage adds another chapter to one of California wine's most enduring stories.
