About Hall Wines

Hall Wines is where contemporary art meets serious winemaking on a scale that few Napa Valley estates can match. Founded in 2003 by Craig and Kathryn Hall, the winery made an immediate visual statement with its St. Helena tasting room, a modernist structure dominated by a 35-foot stainless steel rabbit sculpture by artist Lawrence Argent. The Halls, who made their fortune in real estate and banking (Kathryn served as U.S. Ambassador to Austria), have filled the estate with museum-quality contemporary art, creating a gallery experience that happens to serve wine.

The estate encompasses 500 acres of vineyards across Napa Valley, including holdings in Rutherford, St. Helena, and Sacrashe, a high-elevation vineyard on the slopes of Mount George that the Halls consider their grand cru. The vineyard management is certified organic, and the winery itself is LEED Gold certified, reflecting the Halls' commitment to environmental responsibility. The breadth of vineyard sources allows the winemaking team to produce wines that range from accessible Sauvignon Blanc to powerful mountain Cabernet.

Winemaker Steve Leveque crafts a portfolio anchored by the flagship Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the most consistently highly rated wines in the valley. The Exzellenz Cabernet, from the highest blocks of the Sacrashe vineyard, competes with the valley's most exclusive bottlings. The portfolio also includes an excellent Merlot, a Sauvignon Blanc, and the WALT label (a separate brand focused on Pinot Noir from cool-climate sites). The winemaking style balances concentration with refinement, avoiding the over-extraction that can plague wines from warm sites.

The tasting experience at Hall is among the most visually stimulating in Napa Valley. The St. Helena tasting room is essentially a contemporary art museum with a wine bar, featuring rotating exhibitions alongside permanent installations. The Ultimate Cabernet Experience offers a deep dive into the estate's top bottlings with library vintages. The Rutherford tasting room, HALL Rutherford, offers a more intimate estate experience focused on wines from the Sacrashe vineyard.

Hall Wines matters because it challenges the false choice between serious winemaking and cultural engagement. The Halls have proven that a winery can be both a place of artistic innovation and a producer of world-class Cabernet, and that the two pursuits actually enhance each other. For visitors who have toured one too many rustic farmhouse tasting rooms, Hall offers a jolt of contemporary energy that reminds them Napa Valley is a living, evolving place.
