About Corison Winery

Cathy Corison is one of the most important and influential winemakers in Napa Valley, a woman who has spent four decades producing Cabernet Sauvignon of such consistent elegance and restraint that her wines have become a benchmark for what the variety can achieve when it is not forced to be bigger, riper, or more powerful than nature intends. Founded in 1987, Corison Winery occupies a modest 10-acre vineyard on the St. Helena benchland, the gravelly, well-drained alluvial soils that have produced great Cabernet since the 19th century. Corison had already established her reputation as winemaker at Chappellet and as a consultant to numerous estates before launching her own label.

The Kronos Vineyard, Corison's crown jewel, is a 4-acre block of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1971 on St. George rootstock, one of the few remaining vineyards in Napa Valley on this pre-phylloxera-era rootstock. The old vines, combined with the gravelly St. Helena benchland soils and Corison's insistence on picking at lower sugar levels than most of her neighbors, produce a Cabernet that is fundamentally different from the prevailing Napa style: lower in alcohol, higher in acidity, more restrained in fruit expression, and more capable of aging for decades.

Cathy Corison makes just one variety, Cabernet Sauvignon, in three bottlings: the Napa Valley Cabernet (blended from multiple vineyard sources), the Kronos Vineyard Cabernet (from the old vines), and the Sunbasket Vineyard Cabernet (from a cool Anderson Valley site). Her winemaking philosophy is rooted in balance: she picks earlier than most, avoids excessive extraction, and ages in a high proportion of neutral oak, allowing the vineyard character to dominate rather than the winemaker's hand. The resulting wines have the freshness and structure to age for 20 to 30 years.

The tasting room is a converted hay barn on the property, as unpretentious as the winemaker herself. Tastings are intimate and often conducted by Cathy personally, who brings decades of experience and a refreshingly direct communication style to every conversation. There is no luxury branding, no architectural statement, and no attempt to create an Instagram moment. The focus is entirely on the wine and the philosophy behind it. At $75, the tasting provides access to one of the most distinctive voices in California winemaking.

Corison matters because she has held her ground against every trend that has swept through Napa Valley since the 1980s. While the valley moved toward riper, bigger, higher-alcohol wines, Corison kept picking at 23.5 Brix, kept her alcohol below 14 percent, and kept producing wines that critics and collectors recognized as genuinely great. Her example has inspired a new generation of winemakers who value restraint over power, and her Kronos Vineyard Cabernet is proof that the most compelling wines are often the ones that try the least to impress.
