About Etude Wines

Etude Wines is a Carneros estate dedicated to the art and science of Pinot Noir, a variety that demands more study, more patience, and more humility than any other grape. The name, French for "study," was chosen by founder Tony Soter (who also helped establish Spottswoode) to reflect his approach to Pinot Noir as a lifelong investigation rather than a finished product. Founded in 1982, Etude was among the earliest producers to recognize Carneros' potential for Burgundian varieties, and the wines have influenced a generation of California Pinot Noir producers.

The estate covers 90 acres of gentle Carneros hillside, planted primarily to Pinot Noir with blocks of Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Carneros climate, cooled by persistent fog and wind from San Pablo Bay, creates growing conditions that slow ripening and preserve the delicate aromatic compounds that make great Pinot Noir so captivating. The estate vineyards include multiple clonal selections of Pinot Noir, each contributing different characteristics to the final blends. Tony Soter's early clonal work here helped establish the template for Carneros Pinot Noir that subsequent producers have followed.

Winemaker Jon Priest continues the investigation that gives Etude its name, producing Pinot Noirs that balance Carneros elegance with enough concentration to satisfy palates accustomed to bigger California wines. The Grace Benoist Ranch Estate Pinot Noir, from the winery's home vineyard, is the flagship, showing red fruit, earthy undertones, and silky texture. The Heirloom Pinot Noir, from the estate's oldest vines, adds depth and complexity. A Pinot Gris from the estate provides a crisp white wine option that pairs beautifully with the region's cooler-weather cuisine.

The tasting room on the estate offers a serene Carneros experience, with views of the vineyard rolling toward the distant bay. Tastings are seated and intimate, with the staff guiding visitors through the portfolio with an emphasis on understanding how different vineyard blocks and clonal selections contribute to each wine's character. The educational focus reflects the winery's name and philosophy, making Etude one of the best places in the valley to deepen your understanding of Pinot Noir.

Etude's significance lies in its role as a bridge between Old World philosophy and New World terroir. Tony Soter brought a Burgundian mindset to a California vineyard, and the result was a style of Pinot Noir that proved California could achieve the elegance and complexity of the Cote d'Or without merely imitating it. The wines remain among the finest Pinot Noirs in the valley, and the investigative spirit that drives them continues to push the boundaries of what Carneros can achieve.
