About Truchard Vineyards

Truchard Vineyards is one of Carneros' most respected and diversified family estates, a 400-acre property that grows an extraordinary range of grape varieties in a region most visitors associate exclusively with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Founded in 1974 by Tony and Jo Ann Truchard, who purchased bare land in Carneros when the region was still considered marginal for grape growing, the estate has since become one of the most important vineyard sources in the appellation, supplying fruit to over two dozen premium wineries while producing an increasingly acclaimed portfolio under its own label.

The 400-acre estate is planted to a dozen different grape varieties, an agricultural diversity that is unusual in any appellation and extraordinary for Carneros. Beyond the expected Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Truchards grow Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Roussanne, and other varieties that most Carneros producers would never consider. This diversity reflects Tony Truchard's experimental spirit and his belief that the estate's varied terrain, which ranges from cool, bay-exposed hillside to warmer, sheltered valleys, can support a wider range of grapes than the appellation's reputation suggests.

Winemaker Sal De Ianni works with this extraordinary palette to produce a portfolio that showcases Carneros' range beyond its two famous varieties. The Pinot Noir is elegant and terroir-driven, the Chardonnay is balanced and mineral, and the Syrah, from warmer estate blocks, is one of the finest cool-climate examples in the valley. The Cabernet Sauvignon, improbable from Carneros, shows the brighter, more elegant character that the cool climate provides. Each wine demonstrates that Carneros is more versatile than its reputation suggests.

The tasting room on the estate property is relaxed and family-friendly, with views of the vineyard-covered hills and the distant bay. Tastings are by appointment and include the full portfolio, with the variety of wines providing one of the most diverse tasting experiences in the valley. Tony and Jo Ann Truchard are frequently present, sharing the story of how they transformed bare Carneros land into one of the appellation's most important estates. The $40 tasting fee is remarkably fair for wines of this quality and diversity.

Truchard matters because it expanded the definition of what Carneros can be. By planting a dozen varieties where others plant two, the Truchards demonstrated that the appellation's cool climate and varied terrain support an agricultural diversity that most producers have been too conservative to explore. The estate's role as a grape supplier to dozens of premium wineries means that Truchard fruit appears in far more bottles than most consumers realize, making the family one of the most influential, if least recognized, forces in Napa Valley winemaking.
