About Dyer Vineyard

Dyer Vineyard is a 6-acre micro-estate on Diamond Mountain run by Dawnine Dyer, one of Napa Valley's most experienced winemakers, who spent 25 years as the winemaker at Domaine Chandon before turning her attention to her own tiny Cabernet vineyard. Founded in 1992 by Dawnine and her husband Bill, the estate represents a career's worth of winemaking knowledge applied to a single, very specific piece of Diamond Mountain terroir. The scale is deliberately small: 6 acres, one variety, one wine, produced by a winemaker who has nothing left to prove and everything still to say.

The 6-acre vineyard sits on the volcanic soils of Diamond Mountain at an elevation of 1,200 feet, planted exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon. The thin, rocky soils force vine roots deep into the fractured volcanic substrate, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavors. The above-fog-line position provides intense sunlight and cool nights, creating the wide temperature swings that produce deeply colored grapes with firm tannins and natural acidity. The vineyard's small size allows Dawnine to farm with an intimacy that larger operations cannot match.

Dawnine Dyer makes the wine herself, bringing 25 years of sparkling wine expertise to the production of still Cabernet, an unusual combination of backgrounds. Her experience at Domaine Chandon, where precision and acidity are paramount, shows in the Cabernet's remarkable freshness and structural clarity. The wine is powerful but not heavy, concentrated but not dense, with the mineral backbone that Diamond Mountain terroir provides. The sparkling wine sensibility gives the Cabernet a vibrancy and tension that many mountain wines lack.

Tastings at Dyer are by appointment and extremely intimate, often hosted by Dawnine herself in the small winery on the property. The experience includes a walk through the 6-acre vineyard, where the Diamond Mountain geology is visible in the exposed rock and thin soils, followed by a tasting of the current and library vintages. The conversation with Dawnine, who can speak with equal authority about methode champenoise and mountain Cabernet, is one of the most fascinating in Napa Valley. The $75 tasting fee provides access to one of the most experienced winemakers in the valley.

Dyer demonstrates that the best second acts in winemaking often come from the most unexpected first acts. A sparkling wine winemaker producing mountain Cabernet sounds like a contradiction, but Dawnine's precise palate and acidity-focused approach produce a Diamond Mountain wine that is more balanced and graceful than most of its neighbors. The estate is a master class in the transfer of skills between seemingly unrelated disciplines.
