About Diamond Mountain Vineyard

Constant Diamond Mountain Vineyard is a perfectionist micro-estate producing a single wine from 7 acres of volcanic hillside, with Philippe Melka bringing his Bordeaux training to one of Napa's most demanding mountain sites. Founded in 1998 by Fred and Mary Constant, the estate was planted with the singular goal of producing one exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon from a site that the Constants believed had the potential to rival the greatest vineyards in the world. The 7-acre size is deliberate: small enough for every vine to receive individual attention, large enough to produce a commercially viable quantity of wine.

The vineyard sits on the volcanic soils of Diamond Mountain at an elevation that places it above the fog line and exposes it to intense direct sunlight. The volcanic rock is porous and well-drained, forcing vine roots deep into the fractured substrate in search of water and nutrients. This natural stress produces berries of extraordinary concentration with thick skins rich in color and tannin. The combination of mountain elevation, volcanic soil, and small yields creates fruit of a quality that few valley-floor vineyards can match.

Philippe Melka, whose consulting portfolio includes some of the most prestigious addresses in Napa Valley, crafts the single Constant Cabernet with meticulous care. The wine is aged in new French oak for 22 months before spending additional time in bottle before release. Melka's style at Constant emphasizes the mountain character of the fruit, allowing the volcanic minerality and tannic structure to express themselves without heavy-handed extraction. The result is a wine of power and refinement that captures Diamond Mountain's wild, untamed character.

Tastings at Constant are by appointment only and limited to small groups, reflecting the intimate scale of the operation. Visitors are hosted on the estate for a tour of the vineyard and a seated tasting that typically includes the current release alongside one or two library vintages. The mountaintop setting, with panoramic views of the surrounding forest and distant valley, creates a sense of isolation and focus that matches the intensity of the wine. The $100 tasting fee reflects the exclusivity and the caliber of what is poured.

Constant demonstrates what can happen when a small piece of exceptional ground receives the full attention of a world-class winemaker. The estate produces roughly 600 cases per year, an amount so small that every bottle represents an outsized investment of care and precision. For visitors who seek out mountain wines that reflect their origins with clarity and force, Constant is one of the most compelling stops on Diamond Mountain.
