One of Napa's great Merlot producers since 1976, Duckhorn crafts wines of depth and character from estate vineyards across multiple appellations.
Duckhorn Vineyards holds the distinction of being the winery that made Merlot respectable in Napa Valley. When Dan and Margaret Duckhorn founded their winery in 1976, Merlot was an afterthought in the valley, used primarily as a blending grape to soften Cabernet Sauvignon. The Duckhorns saw it differently, recognizing that Merlot could produce wines of complexity and character in its own right. Their Three Palms Vineyard Merlot, sourced from a distinctive site on the Silverado Trail in Calistoga, quickly became the most acclaimed Merlot in California and helped establish the variety as a serious standalone wine.
The estate includes roughly 200 acres of vineyards spread across several Napa Valley appellations, with the crown jewel being the Three Palms Vineyard. Named for the three palm trees that stand at the vineyard's entrance, the site occupies volcanic soils that produce Merlot of unusual depth and structure. The vineyard was planted in the 1960s and has been a consistent source of outstanding fruit for over five decades. Duckhorn also farms estate vineyards in Howell Mountain, Rector Creek, and other premium Napa sites.
Current winemaker Renee Ary inherited a tradition of excellence and has maintained the house style while subtly refining it for modern palates. The Three Palms Merlot remains the flagship, but the portfolio has expanded to include excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and a range of vineyard-designate bottlings. The wine style emphasizes texture and aromatics over raw power, with moderate alcohol levels and careful oak integration allowing the fruit character to remain vivid and expressive.
The tasting room on Lodi Lane in St. Helena is set in a charming farmhouse surrounded by gardens and vineyards. The atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious, a reflection of the Duckhorns' philosophy that wine should be enjoyed rather than analyzed. Several tasting options are available, from a basic flight of current releases to a deep dive into library vintages and vineyard-designate bottlings. The outdoor terrace, shaded by old-growth trees, is one of the most pleasant settings for a tasting in St. Helena.
Duckhorn's influence on Napa Valley extends beyond its own wines. By championing Merlot, the Duckhorns expanded the definition of what Napa could produce and challenged the Cabernet-centric worldview that dominated the valley. The company has since grown into a portfolio of brands including Paraduxx, Goldeneye, and Calera, but the original Duckhorn Vineyards remains the heart of the operation. For visitors, it offers a chance to taste Merlot at its finest from the estate that proved the variety's potential.
