About AXR Napa Valley

AXR Napa Valley takes its name from one of the most painful chapters in the valley's agricultural history: the AXR#1 rootstock that was widely recommended for replanting in the 1980s, only to prove devastatingly susceptible to phylloxera, forcing Napa Valley to replant nearly every vineyard at a cost of billions of dollars. Founded in 2013 by Jean Hoefliger, the former winemaker at Alpha Omega, the label embraces this history of disaster and rebirth, using the AXR name as a reminder that the valley's greatest quality emerged from its greatest setback. The replanting that followed the AXR crisis allowed growers to choose superior clones and rootstocks, ultimately producing better wines than the pre-crisis vineyards.

The winery sources from premium Napa Valley vineyards, selecting lots that demonstrate the quality improvements that the post-AXR replanting made possible. The vineyards that replaced the failed AXR rootstock were planted with modern viticultural knowledge, superior clonal selections, and better vine spacing, resulting in fruit of higher quality than the pre-phylloxera plantings had produced. The AXR wines celebrate this silver lining.

Jean Hoefliger produces a portfolio that includes Cabernet Sauvignon, a proprietary red blend, and Chardonnay, each sourced from vineyards that were replanted after the AXR crisis. The wines are polished and modern, reflecting the viticultural improvements that the replanting enabled. The Cabernet is well-structured and varietal, the blend is smooth and accessible, and the Chardonnay is barrel-fermented with restraint.

Tastings are available by appointment in St. Helena, where the AXR story provides a fascinating educational backdrop for the wines. The tasting experience includes an explanation of the phylloxera crisis and the replanting that followed, connecting the wine in the glass to one of the most consequential events in modern Napa Valley history. The $65 fee includes the portfolio and the history lesson.

AXR demonstrates that disaster can be a catalyst for improvement. The phylloxera crisis that destroyed Napa Valley's vineyards in the 1990s was devastating in the moment, but the replanting that followed produced a new generation of vineyards that are, by every measurable standard, superior to what they replaced. The AXR name is both a memorial and a celebration.
