About Del Dotto Vineyards

Del Dotto Vineyards offers the most extravagant cave tasting experience in Napa Valley, a subterranean journey through hand-carved marble caves where guests taste wines directly from barrels of different French, Hungarian, and American oak. Founded in 1989 by Dave Del Dotto, who made his fortune in the infomercial business before pivoting to wine, the estate channels his showman's instincts into a tasting experience that is equal parts education and spectacle. The caves, imported piece by piece from Italy and assembled by Italian stonemasons, are unlike anything else in the valley.

The estate covers 100 acres of vineyard across St. Helena, Rutherford, and Carneros, providing fruit for a diverse portfolio that includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Sangiovese. The St. Helena estate vineyard on Highway 29 provides the core Cabernet fruit, while the Cinghiale vineyard in Rutherford and the Carneros holdings contribute additional lots. The geographic diversity allows the winemaking team to produce a broad range of wines, each reflecting its source vineyard.

Winemaker Gerard Zanzonico produces wines that are designed to be impressive: deeply colored, richly textured, and generously oaked. The cave tasting experience includes samples drawn directly from barrels of different coopers, allowing visitors to taste how different oak origins shape the same wine. The David Del Dotto Signature Cabernet is the flagship, a wine that aims for maximum impact. The Piazza Family label offers Italian-inspired bottlings that reflect Del Dotto's heritage. The wines are big and bold, matching the personality of the caves and the man who built them.

The cave tasting is the main event. Visitors descend into the illuminated marble caves, where an expert guide leads them through a series of barrel stations, drawing wine with a pipette and explaining how French oak differs from Hungarian, how tight-grained barrels differ from open-grained, and how time in wood transforms juice into wine. The experience is theatrical but genuinely educational, and many visitors cite it as the most memorable tasting they have ever attended. Multiple cave options are available, from a standard tour to the ultra-premium Venetian Estate experience. Prices range from $90 to significantly higher for private options.

Del Dotto is a love-it-or-leave-it proposition. The baroque excess of the marble caves, the showmanship of the barrel tasting, and the unapologetically big wines are designed to overwhelm the senses rather than whisper to them. For visitors who want their wine country experience to be dramatic, educational, and unforgettable, Del Dotto delivers on all three counts. For those who prefer quiet restraint, there are 500 other wineries in the valley.
