About Chimney Rock Winery

Chimney Rock Winery is a Stags Leap District jewel distinguished by its Cape Dutch architecture, a style borrowed from the wine estates of South Africa's Stellenbosch region. Founded in 1980 by Hack and Stella Wilson, who fell in love with the Cape Dutch style during their travels, the winery is one of the most visually distinctive estates in the valley. The white-gabled buildings, framed by the volcanic palisades of the Stags Leap District, create a setting that feels transported from another hemisphere while remaining deeply rooted in Napa Valley terroir.

The estate covers 120 acres of vineyard in the heart of the Stags Leap District, planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting blocks of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot for Bordeaux-style blending. The district's volcanic soils and the thermal influence of the palisades create conditions that consistently produce Cabernets of both power and elegance. The estate is now part of the Terlato Wine Group portfolio, which has invested significantly in the vineyards and winemaking facilities while preserving the Wilson family's architectural vision.

Winemaker Elizabeth Vianna, a Brazilian-born winemaker with Bordeaux training, crafts wines that honor the Stags Leap District's reputation for elegance. The estate Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship, a wine that balances the district's characteristic dark fruit and silky tannins with a savory complexity that emerges with bottle aging. The Ganymede Cabernet, the estate's reserve bottling, adds layers of concentration and aromatic complexity. The Rose of Cabernet Sauvignon, made from estate fruit, is one of the most serious roses produced in the valley.

The tasting room, set within the Cape Dutch buildings, offers a setting unlike any other in Napa Valley. The white-painted gables, formal gardens, and reflecting pools create an atmosphere of understated elegance. Tastings are seated and guided, with the staff explaining how the Stags Leap District's terroir shapes the wines. The outdoor terrace provides views of the palisades, and the overall experience is one of calm refinement.

Chimney Rock's distinction lies in the intersection of its unique architecture and its exceptional terroir. The Cape Dutch style is not mere decoration but a genuine expression of the founders' love of wine culture from around the world. Combined with the Stags Leap District's world-class Cabernet terroir and Elizabeth Vianna's skilled winemaking, the result is an estate that engages both the eye and the palate in equal measure.
