About Barnett Vineyards

Barnett Vineyards is a Spring Mountain estate at 2,000 feet elevation that produces concentrated reds alongside a surprisingly elegant cool-climate Pinot Noir, demonstrating the mountain's range beyond the Cabernet Sauvignon that dominates its reputation. Founded in 1983 by Hal and Fiona Barnett, the estate occupies 30 acres of terraced hillside where the elevation, exposure, and volcanic soils combine to produce wines of intensity and character. The discovery that a north-facing block of the property could produce exceptional Pinot Noir was a happy accident that expanded the estate's portfolio in an unexpected direction.

The 30-acre vineyard is planted on steep, terraced slopes across a range of exposures. The south and west-facing blocks, which receive the most direct sunlight, produce Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot of mountain intensity: dark, tannic, and mineral-driven. The north-facing block, cooler and shadier, turned out to be ideal for Pinot Noir, a variety that most mountain producers would never consider planting. The volcanic soils are consistent across the property, but the dramatic differences in sun exposure create distinctly different growing conditions within a single estate.

Winemaker David Tate crafts wines that capture the dual personality of the mountain site. The Rattlesnake Hill Cabernet, from the estate's warmest and most exposed blocks, is the most powerful wine in the portfolio, dark and structured with the tannic grip of mountain fruit. The Spring Mountain Merlot is softer but still carries the mineral signature of the volcanic soils. The Pinot Noir, from the north-facing block, is a revelation: light-bodied, aromatic, and delicate, proving that Spring Mountain can produce cool-climate wines of genuine elegance when the site allows it.

The drive to Barnett is a mountain adventure, climbing Spring Mountain Road through switchbacks and forest before arriving at the 2,000-foot summit. The tasting room offers panoramic views that stretch across the valley to the Vaca Range, creating one of the most dramatic settings on the mountain. Tastings are by appointment and include the full portfolio, with the side-by-side comparison of the Cabernet and the Pinot Noir providing a fascinating lesson in how exposure shapes wine. The $65 fee is moderate for mountain wines of this quality.

Barnett demonstrates that Spring Mountain's terroir is more versatile than its Cabernet-dominated reputation suggests. The ability to produce both powerful mountain reds and delicate cool-climate Pinot from the same property expands the definition of what the appellation can achieve, and it gives visitors a tasting experience that is more varied and more educational than the typical mountain Cabernet lineup.
