About Antonio Mountain Vineyards

Antonio Mountain Vineyards is an Atlas Peak estate at 1,600 feet producing bold mountain wines from the red volcanic soils that give the appellation its distinctive iron-rich character. Founded in 2004, the estate occupies 45 acres of steep terrain where the combination of altitude, volcanic geology, and intense sunlight creates conditions that produce wines of deep color, concentrated flavor, and firm tannic structure. The inclusion of Sangiovese alongside the expected Cabernet and Syrah reflects the Italian heritage that runs through many of Napa's mountain estates.

The 45-acre vineyard is planted on the red volcanic soils that characterize Atlas Peak, at an elevation that places it well above the valley fog. The iron-rich soils produce wines of distinctive dark color and mineral depth, while the altitude provides the temperature extremes that concentrate flavors and preserve acidity. The Sangiovese planting is unusual for Atlas Peak and shows the variety's bright acidity and cherry character in a mountain context. The Syrah, from the estate's warmest blocks, develops the peppery, dark-fruited intensity that the variety achieves at elevation.

Winemaker Michael Eddy produces a portfolio that showcases Atlas Peak's range. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship, dark and structured with the iron-mineral character of the red volcanic soils. The Sangiovese provides a lighter, more food-friendly option that demonstrates the mountain's versatility. The Syrah is bold and spicy, showing the cool-climate character that elevation provides even in Napa's warm growing conditions.

Tastings are by appointment and conducted on the mountaintop estate, where the red volcanic soils are dramatically visible and the views extend across the valley to the Mayacamas Range. The mountain drive filters out casual visitors, and the reward is an intimate experience in one of the valley's most geologically dramatic settings. The $65 fee includes the full portfolio and the mountaintop views.

Antonio Mountain demonstrates that Atlas Peak's volcanic terroir supports more than just Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sangiovese and Syrah show the appellation's range, and the red volcanic soils provide a visual and gustatory signature that is unique among Napa's mountain appellations. For visitors interested in the intersection of geology and wine, the red dirt of Atlas Peak tells a story that the glass confirms.
