About Sullivan Vineyards

Sullivan Vineyards is a family estate in Rutherford that has been quietly producing well-crafted wines since 1972, when Jim Sullivan planted his first vines on the benchland soil that would become one of the appellation's most reliable sources of quality Cabernet. Now run by Jim's son Sean, the estate occupies 26 acres of vineyard on the western side of Rutherford, where the alluvial soils and warm growing season produce fruit of classic appellation character. The winery's low profile belies the quality of its wines, which have earned a loyal following among visitors who discover the estate by word of mouth.

The 26-acre vineyard sits on the Rutherford benchland, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay on soils that are typical of the appellation's best sites: deep, well-drained alluvium with a gravelly substructure. The vineyard has been in continuous production since the early 1970s, giving the vines the kind of deep root systems and mature balance that young plantings lack. The farming is straightforward and sustainable, reflecting a family that views itself as stewards of the land rather than manipulators of it.

Winemaker Jeff Cole produces wines that favor balance and food-friendliness over power and concentration. The Cabernet Sauvignon shows the earthy, mineral character that defines Rutherford's best wines, with moderate alcohol and integrated tannins that make it approachable on release. The Merlot is plush and aromatic, and the Chardonnay is clean and balanced. The Coeur du Vignerons blend, combining the best lots of Cabernet and Merlot, offers an accessible introduction to the estate's style. Prices across the portfolio are notably fair for Rutherford wines of this quality.

The tasting room on the estate is small and family-run, with Sean Sullivan or his staff providing personal attention that reflects the estate's intimate scale. The atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious, and the conversation tends toward farming and family rather than scores and marketing. The vineyard surrounds the tasting room, providing an immediate visual connection between the wine and its source. At $45, the tasting includes the full portfolio and an experience that feels more like a family visit than a commercial transaction.

Sullivan represents the kind of multi-generational farming family that forms the backbone of Rutherford's winemaking culture. The estate has never sought fame, never chased high scores, and never raised prices to match its more aggressive neighbors. What it has done, consistently for over five decades, is produce honest, well-crafted Rutherford wine and sell it to people who appreciate quality without hype.
