About Nichelini Family Winery

Nichelini Family Winery is the oldest continuously family-owned winery in Napa Valley, an operation that has been making wine since 1890 and is now in its fifth generation of family ownership. Founded by Anton Nichelini, a Swiss-Italian immigrant who built a stone winery in the remote Chiles Valley District, the estate has survived Prohibition (by making sacramental wine), the Depression, two world wars, and every trend that has swept through the valley in the 134 years since its founding. The $25 tasting fee is among the lowest in the valley, reflecting a family philosophy that values accessibility over exclusivity.

The estate covers 40 acres in the Chiles Valley District, one of Napa's most remote and least-visited appellations. The warm eastern valley climate produces bold, full-flavored reds, with the estate's Zinfandel and Petite Sirah showing the concentrated character that the conditions naturally encourage. The Primitivo, genetically identical to Zinfandel but vinified separately, provides a lighter, more aromatic alternative. The Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate's warmest blocks is rich and generously flavored.

Winemaker Aimee Sunseri, a fifth-generation family member, produces wines that honor the estate's long history while meeting modern quality standards. The Zinfandel is the estate's signature, a bold, spicy wine that recalls the Italian immigrant winemaking tradition of the family's founders. The Petite Sirah is dark and tannic, and the Primitivo is lighter and more food-friendly. The wines are unpretentious and fairly priced, with most bottles available for under $30.

The drive to Nichelini through the Chiles Valley is scenic and remote, passing through ranch land and oak forests. The tasting room, housed in the original 1890 stone building, is a genuine time capsule: thick stone walls, ancient wooden beams, and the accumulated character of 134 years of family winemaking. Tastings are conducted by family members, and the $25 fee is the lowest in the valley alongside Madonna Estate. The experience feels like stepping backward in time to a Napa Valley that existed before the luxury era.

Nichelini matters because its unbroken 134-year family ownership is a living link to the immigrant farmers who built the valley's wine industry. The stone winery, the family stories, and the affordable wines preserve a tradition that corporate acquisitions and luxury branding are steadily erasing from the rest of the valley. Visiting Nichelini is visiting the Napa Valley that existed before the world discovered it.
