About Mi Sueno Winery

Mi Sueno Winery is one of the most inspiring stories in Napa Valley, the personal triumph of Rolando Herrera, who came to Napa from Mexico as a teenage vineyard worker and rose through sheer talent and determination to become a respected winemaker with his own estate. "Mi Sueno" means "my dream" in Spanish, and the name captures the essence of Herrera's journey from the rows to the cellar. Founded in 1997, the winery produces estate wines from 30 acres of Oak Knoll District vineyard, the physical realization of a dream that began when a young man from Michoacan picked his first cluster of grapes in a Napa vineyard.

Herrera's path from vineyard worker to winery owner followed the same trajectory as other Mexican-American pioneers in the valley, including the Robledo, Renteria, Ceja, and Maldonado families. He started picking grapes at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, moved to cellar work, and eventually became winemaker at Vine Cliff before launching his own label. The 30-acre Oak Knoll District estate was the fulfillment of a promise he made to himself: that he would one day own land in the valley where he had labored as a teenager.

Rolando Herrera makes the wines himself, producing a diverse portfolio that includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Pinot Noir from the estate and from other premium Napa Valley vineyards. The Cabernet is structured and polished, showing the Oak Knoll District's characteristic balance. The Chardonnay is rich and barrel-fermented, and the Syrah demonstrates Herrera's range beyond the Bordeaux varieties. The wines consistently earn strong reviews, and the portfolio's diversity reflects Herrera's curiosity and willingness to explore multiple varieties.

The tasting room is located in the Oak Knoll District, where Herrera hosts visitors with the warmth and humility that define his personality. The experience is personal and often emotional, as the story of his journey from vineyard worker to winery owner resonates deeply with visitors from all backgrounds. The $50 tasting fee includes the full portfolio and an encounter with one of the most compelling personal stories in American wine.

Mi Sueno matters because it embodies the American immigrant dream in its purest form. Rolando Herrera's journey from undocumented worker to respected winemaker and estate owner is a story of talent, perseverance, and the transformative power of hard work. The wines are excellent, but the story behind them elevates every sip into something larger than what is in the glass.
