About Long Meadow Ranch

Long Meadow Ranch is the most complete agricultural estate in Napa Valley, a diversified farming operation that produces wine, olive oil, grass-fed beef, free-range eggs, fruits, and vegetables across 650 acres of Rutherford and Mayacamas Mountain land. Founded in 1989 by Ted and Laddie Hall, the estate was built on the radical (for Napa Valley) premise that a vineyard is healthiest when it exists within a functioning agricultural ecosystem rather than as a monoculture. The Halls' commitment to regenerative agriculture extends from the hilltop vineyard to the cattle pastures to the farmstand in downtown St. Helena.

The estate's vineyard holdings span from the valley floor in Rutherford to the upper slopes of the Mayacamas Range, with elevations ranging from 200 to 2,400 feet. The geographic diversity provides fruit for a portfolio that includes Cabernet Sauvignon from the mountain estate, Pinot Noir from the cooler Anderson Valley, and Sauvignon Blanc from the Rutherford valley floor. The entire operation is certified organic, and the farming practices go well beyond the minimum requirements: cover crops, composting, rotational grazing, and pollinator habitat are integrated into every aspect of the estate's management.

Winemaker Stephane Vivier produces wines that reflect the estate's agricultural philosophy: balanced, food-friendly, and expressive of their origins. The Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship, a wine that delivers classic appellation character with the natural balance that organic farming provides. The Sauvignon Blanc is bright and herbal, and the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is delicate and perfumed. The wines are priced to be enjoyed at the dinner table rather than stored in a cellar, which is consistent with a farming operation that believes wine is food.

The tasting experience extends across multiple locations. The Farmstead restaurant in downtown St. Helena serves estate-grown produce alongside the wines, and the General Store sells olive oil, preserves, and other farm products. The main estate on the Mayacamas Mountains offers vineyard tours that encompass the full agricultural operation, from the vineyards to the cattle herds to the olive groves. The $45 tasting fee at the Farmstead is one of the best values in St. Helena, and the integration of food and wine makes every visit memorable.

Long Meadow Ranch matters because it embodies the agricultural ideal that inspired Napa Valley's founders: a farm that grows many things, cares for the land, and feeds people well. In a valley increasingly dominated by vineyards and tasting rooms, the Halls have preserved a vision of agriculture that is diverse, sustainable, and community-centered. The wine is excellent, but it is the farming that makes Long Meadow Ranch essential.
