Francis Ford Coppola's historic estate, home to the iconic Rubicon blend. One of Napa's most immersive winery experiences.
Inglenook is the most dramatic resurrection story in Napa Valley. Originally founded as a Finnish fur trader's ranch in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, the estate produced some of California's most acclaimed wines in the early 20th century before decades of corporate ownership diluted the brand and sold off its most precious vineyard parcels. In 1975, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, flush with Godfather profits, began buying back the estate piece by piece. It took him over 20 years to reassemble the original Niebaum property, and in 2011 he restored the Inglenook name after a legal battle, completing a four-decade restoration of one of Napa's most storied estates.
The estate encompasses 235 acres of prime Rutherford benchland, including the original vineyard blocks that Niebaum planted in the 1880s. The property is anchored by the stunning stone chateau that Niebaum built in 1887, a gravity-flow winery designed in the Bordeaux tradition and now restored to its original grandeur. The vineyards surround the chateau in a continuous sweep of vines that captures the essence of Rutherford terroir: warm days, cool nights, and alluvial soils deposited by Napa Creek over millennia.
Winemaker Philippe Bascaules, who came to Inglenook from Chateau Margaux in Bordeaux, brings a distinctly French sensibility to the winemaking. The flagship Rubicon, a Cabernet-dominant Bordeaux blend, is crafted in a style that prizes elegance and structure over sheer power. Bascaules believes that great wine should taste of its place rather than its winemaker, and the Rubicon consistently delivers the mineral, earthy quality that Rutherford producers call "Rutherford Dust." The portfolio also includes an excellent Cabernet Franc, an Edizione Pennino Zinfandel (named after Coppola's maternal grandfather), and a Blancaneaux white blend.
The tasting experience at Inglenook is among the most immersive in the valley. The Bistro offers casual tastings and food pairings in a beautiful outdoor courtyard. The Heritage tasting takes visitors through the historic chateau, including the film memorabilia museum that houses Coppola's Oscar statuettes and props from his films. The Library tasting pairs older vintages with the story of the estate's century-long journey from glory through decline and back to greatness.
Inglenook's restoration is more than a feel-good story about a wealthy filmmaker's passion project. It represents the recovery of one of Napa Valley's foundational estates, a property whose wines were winning international medals in the 1880s, long before most of today's famous wineries were planted. Under Coppola's ownership, Inglenook has reclaimed its place among Napa's first-growth estates, producing wines worthy of Niebaum's original vision. For visitors, the combination of history, architecture, wine, and Hollywood glamour creates an experience that is unique in the valley.
