About Hoopes Vineyard

Hoopes Vineyard is a Yountville estate where the farmer-first philosophy of its founders produces Cabernet Sauvignon of genuine terroir expression from one of the valley's most underappreciated vineyard sites. Founded in 1999 by Spencer Hoopes, a fourth-generation farmer whose family has been working the land in California since the late 1800s, the estate covers 30 acres of prime Yountville benchland. The agricultural heritage runs deep: Hoopes views himself as a grape farmer who happens to make wine, not a winemaker who happens to farm grapes, and that distinction shapes every decision on the property.

The 30-acre vineyard sits on the alluvial benchland that defines the best Yountville terroir, with well-drained, gravelly soils that naturally limit vine vigor and concentrate flavors. The Yountville climate, cooler than Oakville or Rutherford but warmer than Carneros, produces Cabernet of elegance and balance rather than sheer power. The farming is meticulous and hands-on, with Spencer Hoopes personally overseeing every aspect of viticulture. The estate also supplies fruit to several other premium producers, testament to the vineyard's quality.

Winemaker Maya Dalla Valle, daughter of Naoko Dalla Valle and a rising star in her own right, crafts the estate Cabernet with respect for the vineyard's character. The wine shows Yountville's signature combination of dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and moderate weight, avoiding the over-extraction and high alcohol that can overwhelm lesser sites. The Sauvignon Blanc, from cooler blocks on the property, is crisp and mineral-driven. Both wines are produced in limited quantities, ensuring personal attention at every stage.

The tasting experience at Hoopes reflects the estate's farming roots. Visitors are hosted on the property for tastings that often include a walk through the vineyard, where Spencer's agricultural philosophy comes to life in the rows. The atmosphere is relaxed and genuine, with the staff sharing the farmer's perspective on winemaking rather than the marketer's. The $55 tasting fee includes the full portfolio and the rare opportunity to taste wines from a vineyard that most visitors experience only through other producers' bottles.

Hoopes matters because it represents the agricultural foundation on which Napa Valley's wine industry rests. Before the famous labels, before the tasting rooms, before the scores and the critics, there was the farming. Spencer Hoopes embodies that tradition, producing wine that tastes of the land because it was grown by someone who understands the land at the deepest level.
