About Ghost Block Estate Wines

Ghost Block Estate Wines occupies one of the most convenient and charming locations in Oakville, directly across from the historic Oakville Grocery on Highway 29. Founded in 2003 by the Pelkan family, the estate takes its name from a mysterious block of vines on the property that appeared and disappeared over the decades, a "ghost block" that old-timers recalled but could never quite locate. The story captures the romanticism and mystery that surrounds Napa Valley's vineyard history, where old planting records are incomplete and vines from the 19th century occasionally surface in unexpected places.

The estate covers 40 acres of Oakville benchland, with the vineyard benefiting from the alluvial soils and moderate climate that make the appellation one of Napa's most prestigious. The vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small block of Sauvignon Blanc providing the fruit for the estate's white wine. The farming is meticulous, with careful canopy management ensuring that each cluster receives optimal sun exposure and airflow in the warm Oakville growing conditions.

Winemaker Rob Gilligan produces a focused portfolio of two wines: an Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and an Estate Sauvignon Blanc. The Cabernet is classic Oakville, with dark fruit, firm tannins, and the dusty mineral character that defines the appellation's best wines. The Sauvignon Blanc, less expected from an Oakville estate, is bright and refreshing, a welcome palate-cleanser in a valley dominated by reds. The deliberate decision to produce only two wines allows Gilligan to devote his full attention to each, and the quality reflects that focus.

The tasting room is small and intimate, with a handful of seats at the bar and a patio that looks out on the vineyard. The proximity to the Oakville Grocery makes it an ideal pairing: grab lunch at the grocery, taste wine at Ghost Block, and you have one of the most satisfying midday experiences on Highway 29. Tastings are relaxed and conversational, with the staff taking genuine interest in visitors' wine backgrounds and preferences. At $50, the tasting is a good value for Oakville wines.

Ghost Block is the kind of small, focused estate that gets lost in the noise of Napa's marquee brands, and that is precisely what makes it worth seeking out. The wines deliver Oakville quality without Oakville pretension, the setting is charming rather than grand, and the experience feels personal rather than scripted. For visitors who have toured the valley's architectural showpieces and are ready for something more authentic, Ghost Block is a welcome change of pace.
