A Yountville hillside estate producing a single Bordeaux-style blend crafted by Philippe Melka. Twenty micro-blocks are individually farmed to capture every nuance of the diverse terroir.
Gemstone Vineyard is a Yountville hillside estate producing a single Bordeaux-style blend crafted by Philippe Melka from 20 acres of volcanic terrain that the winery has spent decades developing into one of the most precisely farmed vineyard sites in the valley. Founded in 1996, the estate's single-wine focus allows the winemaking team to devote total attention to one blend, assembling the best lots from across the 20-acre property into a wine that captures the full diversity of the hillside terroir.
The 20-acre vineyard rises from the Yountville valley floor onto volcanic hillside, with the elevation change providing multiple soil types and exposures within the compact property. Each block is managed individually and vinified separately, giving Philippe Melka a palette of lots from which to compose the annual blend. The volcanic soils contribute mineral intensity, while the lower sections provide generosity and approachability.
Philippe Melka produces a single proprietary blend that changes proportions each vintage based on what the vineyard delivers. The wine is polished and complex, with the dark fruit and mineral backbone of volcanic-grown fruit refined by Melka's Bordeaux-trained palate. The single-wine format ensures that every lot in the blend is chosen for its contribution to the whole.
Tastings are by appointment, with the single-wine focus creating a tasting experience of unusual depth. The $125 fee includes the current and library vintages.
Gemstone demonstrates the power of single-wine focus: when every resource, every lot, and every decision serves a single blend, the resulting wine achieves a completeness that multi-wine portfolios rarely match.
