About Gamble Family Vineyards

Gamble Family Vineyards represents one of the deepest agricultural roots in the Oakville appellation, a family whose farming history on this land stretches back to the 1910s, predating most of the famous wineries that now surround them by decades. Tom Gamble, who launched the winery label in 2003, is a third-generation farmer who grew up on the Oakville benchland that his grandparents cultivated, giving him an intimate knowledge of the terroir that no newcomer can replicate. The 200-acre estate, much of which the family sells to other premium producers, provides the raw material for wines that reflect a century of farming knowledge.

The 200-acre estate sits on the Oakville benchland, one of the most coveted agricultural addresses in the world. The alluvial soils, deposited by ancient waterways from the Mayacamas Range, provide the deep, well-drained growing conditions that have made Oakville synonymous with great Cabernet. The Gamble family's century-long tenure on this land means that their farming decisions are informed by generational experience rather than textbook theory. The portion of fruit reserved for the family label comes from the estate's finest blocks.

Winemaker Jim Close produces a focused portfolio led by the estate Cabernet Sauvignon and a crisp Sauvignon Blanc. The Cabernet is classic Oakville: dark-fruited, well-structured, and earthy, with the benchland character that a century of farming has taught the family to optimize. The Sauvignon Blanc is one of the best in the appellation, showing the bright acidity and herbal complexity that the variety achieves in Oakville's warm but well-managed vineyard conditions.

Tastings are by appointment on the estate, where three generations of farming history provide context for every sip. The connection between the wine in the glass and the land that produced it is more tangible at Gamble than at most Napa estates, because the family has been working this specific dirt for over 100 years. The $75 fee includes wines that represent one of the deepest agricultural legacies in the valley.

Gamble matters because it connects visitors to the farming heritage that made Oakville great before the famous winery names arrived. The Gamble family was growing grapes on this land when most of today's celebrated estates were still bare dirt, and their continued ownership ensures that at least one piece of Oakville remains in the hands of the farmers who made it fertile.
