About Frog's Leap Winery

Frog's Leap Winery is the most joyful serious winery in Napa Valley. Founded in 1981 by John Williams on a former frog farm in Rutherford, the winery has spent four decades proving that great wine and environmental stewardship are not only compatible but inseparable. Williams was among the first Napa producers to farm organically and dry-farm his vineyards without irrigation, practices that were considered radical in the 1980s and are now recognized as forward-thinking. The name itself, a playful twist on Stag's Leap, signals the winery's refusal to take itself too seriously even while taking its farming very seriously.

The estate covers 220 acres of Rutherford benchland, all of it certified organic and dry-farmed. Without irrigation, the vines send roots deep into the gravelly loam in search of water, producing smaller berries with more concentrated flavors and natural acidity. Williams believes that this stress is essential to making wines that taste of their place rather than their winemaker. The vineyard also incorporates cover crops, composting, and a solar-powered winery that produces more energy than it consumes.

The wine portfolio reflects the diversity of the farming. Frog's Leap produces excellent Sauvignon Blanc, one of the best in California, alongside Zinfandel from heritage vines, Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate, and a Rutherford red blend. The style across all wines emphasizes balance, drinkability, and food-friendliness over sheer power. Williams has long argued that a wine's job is to make dinner better, not to overwhelm the palate, and his wines deliver on that promise with consistency that borders on the remarkable.

Visiting Frog's Leap feels nothing like visiting most Napa wineries. The red barn tasting room, the kitchen garden, the barn cats lounging in the sun, and the genuine warmth of the staff create an atmosphere that is more family farm than luxury estate. Tastings are relaxed and often punctuated by conversation about farming, cooking, and the rhythms of the season. At $40, the tasting fee is one of the most reasonable in the valley for wines of this quality.

Frog's Leap matters because it represents a path not taken by most of Napa Valley. While the valley chased higher alcohol, bigger extraction, and loftier price points through the 1990s and 2000s, Williams quietly kept making balanced, food-friendly wines from organically farmed land. His reward is a winery that has outlasted trends, built a fiercely loyal following, and earned the respect of winemakers around the world. For visitors who want to taste what Napa can be at its most authentic, Frog's Leap is essential.
