About Dutch Henry Winery

Dutch Henry Winery is one of Calistoga's most beloved small wineries, a 13-acre estate that has earned a devoted following through an unusually diverse portfolio, casual, friends-in-the-vineyard hospitality, and prices that make visitors wonder if they have traveled back in time to a more affordable era of Napa Valley. Founded in 1992 on Silverado Trail in Calistoga, Dutch Henry takes its name from a local historical figure and has maintained its small-batch, handcrafted approach for over three decades while the valley around it has scaled up and priced up.

The 13-acre vineyard is planted to an eclectic mix of varieties that would be unusual at any Napa estate, let alone one in warm Calistoga. Cabernet Sauvignon anchors the portfolio as expected, but the vineyard also grows Syrah, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and other varieties that most Calistoga producers would never attempt. The diversity reflects the winery's experimental spirit and its willingness to let the vineyard dictate what it wants to grow rather than following the market's demand for Cabernet above all else.

Winemaker Josh Clark works with this diverse palette to produce small lots of each variety, creating a portfolio that is one of the most varied in the valley. The Cabernet is bold and Calistoga-warm, the Syrah is peppery and savory, and the Pinot Noir, improbable from such a warm climate, shows the lighter, brighter character that skilled winemaking can coax from warm-climate fruit. The Zinfandel is spicy and concentrated, and a late-harvest dessert wine provides a sweet finish. Total production across all varieties is tiny, ensuring that every wine receives personal attention.

The tasting room on the Silverado Trail has the feel of a backyard gathering rather than a commercial operation. The small space opens onto a patio overlooking the vineyard, and the staff pour with the generosity and warmth of friends sharing their favorite bottles. Tastings are casual and unhurried, with visitors encouraged to explore the full range of varieties. At $50, the fee includes access to one of the most diverse lineups on the trail.

Dutch Henry represents the artisan spirit that many visitors come to Napa Valley hoping to find. In a valley increasingly dominated by corporate brands and luxury pricing, this small estate produces wine with the care and personality of a home winemaker who happens to have excellent dirt. The diversity of the portfolio, the warmth of the hospitality, and the fairness of the pricing combine to create the kind of tasting experience that turns first-time visitors into lifelong fans.
