About Dunn Vineyards

Dunn Vineyards is the most uncompromising winery in Napa Valley, an estate that makes exactly one grape variety from exactly one mountain and refuses to apologize for wines that need a decade or more to show their best. Founded in 1979 by Randy Dunn, who was simultaneously serving as winemaker at Caymus Vineyards, the estate occupies 40 acres of volcanic hillside on Howell Mountain at elevations above 2,000 feet. Dunn left Caymus in 1985 to focus exclusively on his own mountain Cabernet, and the wines he has produced since are among the longest-lived and most collectible in California.

The vineyard sits on the thin, rocky volcanic soils that define the Howell Mountain AVA, one of the most rugged and unforgiving growing environments in Napa Valley. At 2,000-plus feet, the vines receive intense sunlight but cool quickly at night, creating conditions that produce small berries with thick skins and enormous concentration of flavor and tannin. Dunn does not irrigate, forcing the roots deep into the fractured volcanic rock. The resulting grapes produce wines of extraordinary density and structure that bear little resemblance to the plush, approachable Cabernets made on the valley floor.

Mike Dunn, Randy's son, now oversees winemaking and maintains his father's famously austere style. The wines are aged in a combination of new and used French oak for over two years before spending additional time in bottle before release. When young, Dunn Cabernets are tannic, tightly wound, and forbiddingly structured. With a decade or more of cellaring, they unfold into complex, layered wines of astonishing depth. The estate produces two bottlings: a Howell Mountain Cabernet and a Napa Valley Cabernet sourced from the family's lower-elevation vineyards.

Visiting Dunn is deliberately difficult. The estate does not maintain a regular tasting room, and visits are by appointment only under limited circumstances. Randy Dunn has been openly skeptical of wine tourism, preferring to let the wines speak for themselves through retailers and restaurants rather than through a tasting room experience. This inaccessibility is part of the Dunn mystique and reflects a genuine belief that the winemaker's job ends when the wine goes into the bottle.

Dunn Vineyards matters because it represents the road not taken by most of Napa Valley. While the valley moved toward riper, softer, more immediately accessible wines through the 1990s and 2000s, Randy Dunn kept making mountain Cabernets of uncompromising structure and austerity. His wines reward patience, not instant gratification, and they have outlasted every trend that has swept through the valley during his career. For collectors and purists, Dunn is a benchmark against which all other Howell Mountain wines are measured.
