About Domaine Chandon

Domaine Chandon is the most important sparkling wine estate in Napa Valley's history, the producer that proved California could make world-class bubbles and opened the door for every French-owned sparkling house that followed. Founded in 1973 by Moet and Chandon of Champagne (now part of LVMH), Domaine Chandon was the first French-owned winery in California and represented a seismic vote of confidence in the Napa Valley terroir at a time when the region was still struggling for international recognition. The establishment sent a clear message: if the people who make Dom Perignon believe California can produce great sparkling wine, the potential is real.

The estate encompasses approximately 1,000 acres of vineyard across Napa and Sonoma counties, with the primary sources in the cool-climate regions of Carneros and Mount Veeder. The vineyard network provides Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of the high acidity and restrained flavors essential for fine sparkling wine. The recently renovated Yountville winery and tasting room, redesigned as a sleek, garden-centered hospitality destination, has transformed one of the valley's most visited estates into one of its most beautiful.

Winemaker Pauline Lhote, a native of Champagne, produces sparkling wines using the traditional methode champenoise, with the entire process from primary fermentation through riddling and disgorgement conducted on site. The portfolio ranges from the accessible Brut Classic to the vintage-dated Etoile, which spends years on the lees developing the toasty, brioche complexity of serious sparkling wine. The Chandon Garden Spritz, a lighter, aperitif-style offering, has become a phenomenon, attracting a younger audience to sparkling wine. The still wine program, including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, extends the portfolio's range.

The newly renovated tasting experience at Domaine Chandon is built around the garden courtyard, an expansive outdoor space surrounded by native plantings and anchored by a modern tasting bar. The setting is designed for relaxation and celebration rather than formal education, with sparkling wine service by the glass alongside food pairings that emphasize the wines' versatility. The restaurant offers a full dining experience paired with the sparkling portfolio. Walk-in visitors are welcome, and the $45 tasting fee is moderate for the quality and the setting.

Domaine Chandon's legacy extends beyond its own wines. By choosing Napa Valley as the site for their California venture, Moet and Chandon validated the region's potential in the eyes of the global wine establishment. Every subsequent French investment in California wine, from Roederer Estate to Bollinger's recent projects, follows the path that Chandon pioneered. The estate remains one of the most visited wineries in the valley, and the sparkling wines continue to set the standard by which all California bubbles are judged.
