About Canard Vineyard

Canard Vineyard is a small, under-the-radar Calistoga estate that produces honest, terroir-driven wines at prices that most visitors find refreshingly modest for a valley where $75 Cabernets are considered affordable. Founded in 1983 by Pete and Shirley Salinger, the estate occupies 14 acres of Calistoga benchland that the family has farmed with the quiet competence of people who view themselves as farmers first and winery owners second. The name "Canard" (French for "duck") was chosen for the pair of ducks that nested on the property each spring, a small detail that captures the estate's pastoral character.

The 14-acre vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel on the warm Calistoga benchland, where the long growing season produces fruit of full ripeness and generous flavor. The vineyard is farmed sustainably without the certifications or marketing that many estates use to signal their environmental credentials; the Salingers simply farm the way they believe is right and let the wines speak for themselves. The warm climate and volcanic soils produce wines of bold character, with the Zinfandel in particular showing the spicy, concentrated character of heritage Calistoga fruit.

Pete Salinger makes the wines in a straightforward style that emphasizes the vineyard's natural character over winemaker intervention. The Cabernet Sauvignon is medium-bodied and balanced, showing the warm Calistoga fruit without the excessive extraction or oak that can overwhelm lesser wines. The Merlot is plush and food-friendly, and the Zinfandel is spicy and concentrated. The entire portfolio is priced below $50, a remarkable value for estate-grown Napa Valley wines.

The tasting room is modest and welcoming, reflecting the family's farming heritage and their disinterest in the luxury branding that dominates the valley. Tastings are casual and personal, often conducted by family members who share farming stories alongside the wines. The estate's quiet location, off the main Calistoga drag, means that visitors who find Canard feel like they have discovered something genuine. At $45, the tasting is fairly priced for estate Calistoga wines.

Canard represents the Napa Valley that exists beneath the glossy surface: the small family farms that produce excellent wine without the marketing budgets, architectural showpieces, or premium pricing that dominate the public perception of the region. The wines are honest, the people are genuine, and the ducks, presumably, still nest each spring.
